TELL GORDON BROWN "HANDS OFF OUR HOLIDAYS" & GET A FREE FLIGHT
ALL YOU PAY IS GREEDY GORDON'S £10 APD
Ryanair, Europe's largest low fares airline, today (Tuesday, 23rd January
2007) called on Gordon Brown to get his hands off YOUR holidays by
withdrawing his £10 APD on travel.
APD is Gordon Brown's tax on air passengers, which he is doubling from £5
to £10 per passenger from 1st Feb. He claims this is good for the
environment. This claim is rubbish. At £10 on the average Ryanair fare of
£28, ordinary passengers will be forced to pay over 35% in tax. The £1bn
that "Greedy Gordon" collects will go straight into his deep pockets and do
nothing for the environment.
Ryanair passengers are already doing their bit by flying with Europe's
greenest and cleanest airline. Ryanair has achieved this by:
Investing over $10bn in a fleet replacement programme
Operating the youngest, quietest, most fuel efficient aircraft
High load factors
Installing winglets to reduce fuel burn
CO2 emissions reduced by 50% per rpk since 1998
Noise emissions per passenger reduced by 45% since 1998
There is no justification for doubling taxes on ordinary holidaymakers when
the Stern Report confirms that aviation accounts for just 1.6% of global
green house gas emissions.
Speaking today, Ryanair's Head of Communcations, Peter Sherrard said:
"Greedy Gordon's £10 APD is highway robbery which will see him steal an
additional £1bn p.a. from ordinary passengers. Aviation accounts for just
1.6% of GHG emissions and is neither the cause of, nor the solution to
climate change. Ryanair's passengers are already doing their bit by flying
Europe's greenest and cleanest airline.
"It's about time that Greedy Gordon tackled the real causes of climate
change, namely power generation (26% CO2) and road transport (18% CO2).
Stealing this £1bn from ordinary holiday makers is just another tax which
will do nothing for the environment.
"Ryanair is giving away 1M free flights to passengers who write to Gordon
Brown telling him, "Hands off our holidays". Passengers will only have to
pay "Greedy Gordon's" £10 tax so we urge them to send their protest today
and book their free flights at www.ryanair.com".
