Scotland General Aviation Safety Evening

CAA Press Release 18/02/05

Private pilots in Scotland have an opportunity to develop their knowledge
and understanding of matters affecting aviation safety at a specially
arranged Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) safety evening on 2 March at Perth
Airport.

Anyone who takes part in or has an interest in general aviation is also
invited to the evening, which will be hosted by the Perth flying club and
introduced by David Cockburn, who is responsible for safety promotion at
the CAA?s General Aviation Department.

Attendees will be able to discuss with David and other specialists such
topics as:

· Global positioning system satellite navigation
· Understanding weather
· Aircraft maintenance
· Search and rescue
· Air traffic control
· Aviation medical standards.

They will also have the chance to win a selection of prizes donated by
sponsors from the aviation industry.

The evening forms part of the CAA?s commitment to working with the aviation
industry to continue to improve air safety. Approximately 40 presentations
are held at airfields throughout the UK each year. Last year, over 2,000
people attended the series of evenings that were held at locations from
Jersey to Glasgow.

David Cockburn said: ?Although private aviation in the UK has a good safety
record, all pilots, from trainees to experienced instructors, whatever
their aircraft type, should be continually seeking to refine their skills
and knowledge. These evenings provide an excellent opportunity for that.

?The CAA has been running these safety evenings for many years and they
continue to be very popular. I would encourage anyone who is involved in
any form of general aviation to attend.

?I am delighted we will be in Perth on 2 March and look forward to
welcoming the participants.?

The evening starts at 7.30pm in the Stormont Hall at Perth Airport. Those
intending to attend may wish to contact Roger Young on 01738 553357.
Admission is free and tea and coffee will be available in the interval.

For press enquiries contact James Hotson on 020 7453 6025.

Notes to Editors

The CAA is the UK's specialist aviation regulator. Its activities include:
making sure that the aviation industry meets the highest technical and
operational safety standards; preventing holidaymakers from being stranded
abroad or losing money because of tour operator insolvency; planning and
regulating all UK airspace; and regulating airports, air traffic services
and airlines and providing advice on aviation policy from an economic
standpoint.

Quite refreshing that we take aviation safety so seriously that we actively
go out and seek to eductate pilots and do it for nothing.

It would be interesting to sit in on such a meeting.
