X-No-Archive: Yes

Morris,
I thought you had an eventful trip after seeing this photo caption
"Morris and Lonnie arrive after an awful weather-bound journey" at
Dylan's website.
We got back to NY yesterday. Our entire trip was mostly VMC. We
were in actual for maybe an hour a half out of the total 16 hours.
We filed IFR for 5 of 6 flights. Everything went well except for an
unexpected GS failure while doing an ILS approach at DuPage. Both the
localizer and glide slope needles worked fine until we got close to the
outer marker. I noticed that we were a bit lower than the altitude on
the chart and told Rick about it but he told me he was following the
glide slope. I glanced at CDI at everything appeared to be 'right on'!
I could see the runway ahead but thought that we were a bit low. Few
minutes later, the controller asked for our altitude. I told her that
we were at 1200'. She mentioned something abut a low altitude alert. I
told her that we were 'right' on the glide slope and was startled to
hear her saying that we should be higher at that point! Rick
immediately added some power. Within 30 seconds or so, the flag
started to show up confirming the malfunctioning GS, I checked the
identifier and it worked fine, then the flag disappeared and the GS
came alive. We landed uneventfully but was somewhat rattled by the
event. It was a good thing that our first GS failure occurred in
perfect VMC weather instead of IMC.
Coming back to Michigan from Chicago, we decided to fly VFR
following the shoreline. We persuaded my sister and her 3-year old
daughter to fly to Lowell for an impromptu family gets together. We
did not know whether they could handle the flight so we asked her
husband to wait in the car at the airport while we flew west a bit to
check everything out. After ten minutes or so in the air, we called
her husband to let he know that he could start his ground trip to
Lowell by himself and called ATC for flight following to Michigan VFR
along the shoreline. The controller told us to stay out of Bravo
airspace and to head north toward Wisconsin! Rick wondered why he did
not send us south for a shorter route but did not question his order.
The next controller asked for our intention and whether we wanted to
cross the lake. We repeated our request to follow the shoreline heading
to Y70. He told us that previous controller should have sent us south
in the first place. This detour added 20 minutes or so to our trip but
we had a chance to see Meigs field, the aquarium and the Chicago
downtown area while flying over the lake within gliding distance to the
shoreline.
The return trip from Michigan to New York only took us just a bit
over 4 hours (with about 20kts tailwind) in comparison to the previous
7-hours westbound trip (30+kts headwind). Having another off workday
after the trip gave us a chance to relax. We went back to the airport
this morning for a short flight from KPOU to KMGJ to check out the GS.
The ILS 3 approach at KMGJ went without a hitch with both the localizer
and glide slope needles performed normally. The GS fail event was
probably due to a stuck needle but we would not want to do any real ILS
approach until after the avionic shop checks it out. Rick and I
reviewed our flights going through the goods, the bads and the uglies.
Our failure to detect the malfunctioned GS early was the ugliest event
which will be added to our 'never-again' list.

I think Edwin had some pre-flight mechanical issues that delayed his
departure. Unless we were all prepared to wait on that 95 degree ramp for
an undetermined length of time, I don't know what we could have done to help
the situation. (And, remarkably, he ended up being parked just a few planes
away from all of us, in the end!)
Hmmm, forgot about the pre-flight mechanical issue. I was thinking we

all just jumped in our planes when we saw you guys taxiing. All in all,
we did manage pretty well. Well, ok, there were the issues of losing
sight of Jim and Gail way up ahead then the arrival going all weird
after passing Ripon.

Ok, the real reason is we want to be close to wherever MontBlack parks
PMC 2.0. I figure that's near Atlas...ergo, I want to be next to Atlas.
Besides, you guys *always* (ok, the last three years) seem to get a
primo camping spot. End of the row, nice view of
arrivals/departures/etc. Smile Um...and we like the company of the
Honeck clan...really! :-)

Any word from Jim Weir? Is he coming to OSH '06?

Me!

I was around, but didnt get the hat. Don't tend to wear hats.

Wife sez I have to pass on the tee shirt until the freebie stock currently
in the closet gets thinned out. Anybody need a Networld/Interop trade
show tee shirt from '93 or so? Howabout tee shirts from half a dozen
networking companies that no longer exist?

Ah you made the mistake of asking permission beforehand! You should
have just bought one and snuck it into your Tee-shirt wardrobe and said
"Oh this old thing?"

Look. My wife and I both work. We've got two kids. Her income is much
larger than mine. She is exceedingly tolerant of my expenditures for and
on the Bonanza(*). There is no way in heck am I going to start a vaguely
aviation related ruckus over a stinkin' tee shirt.

(*) This weekend I spent 1.3 AMU on new front seat belts. Her response?
"Wow, how cheap. Are you sure they're good enough for the Bonanza?"
Is there any wonder why I love her?

What's his reputation?

And incidentally, I ordered one of the subject line t-shirts.

What I want to know is who reading this thread was around when we had
the rec.aviation hats made, with the @ logo... anyone? anyone? Bueller?

I was around for the hats, but didn't get one.

Was anyone around when the rec.aviation patch that was made?

That was ~1992, before the rec.aviation split into multiple groups.

I came across it in a box last time I moved, I'll scan it if I can find
it.

Yep, though I didn't get the patch.

We used to have more rec.aviation fly-ins, back then...

There was a really fun one at Old Rhinebeck (NY94) in the summer
of 1992, IIRC. A few people were actually able to fly into Old
Rhinebeck, the rest landed at Sky Park (46N).

Anybody going to the Golden West Fly-in at Marysville (MYV)? I'm
flying up for the day on June 10.

It's not like you ran out and bought another Bonanza on the QT. Use the
old tee shirts for buffing that Bonanza up to a high gloss.

Hmm? Montblack = A queer Austin Powers

Hollywood, are you listening? It would show to a limited audience (probably
a very intoxicated audience) and the venues would also be very limited,
(OSH, Pickneyville, Alexis Park Inn, sleezy Las Vegas gay strip joints
maybe). But I think it would be a great project, count me in for one copy.
I'm thinking add about 100 lbs and 10" to Tom Cruise? He's working his way
into a "fairylike, frolicsome, gay, go-go, swinging" type of a guy.

I've a similar arrangement. Some of my tshirts are both from my current
employer AND which no longer exist! The bizarre world of high tech.

I discovered when I was hired at Sun last year that I was *actually*
rejoining my employer-before-last: Storage Tek, which acquired Network
Systems (where I worked), had recently been acquired by Sun. Didn't
get seniority back, though Smile.
