| RETIREMENT OF THE DHC-4 CARIBOU
| As an interim measure, a leased fleet of five additional Hawker Pacific
B300
| King Air aircraft will undertake light air transport tasks. These
aircraft
| will be phased into the Townsville-based 38 Squadron as the Caribou is
| progressively retired toward the end of 2009. Three King Air 350
aircraft,
| currently operated by Army, will also be transferred across to 38
Squadron.

Great replace the Caribou (for 4 years) with an aircraft type that cannot
do the job.
(Why not just buy The C-27J and be done with it)
Instead of a toy executive a/c.

They have to wait for the White Paper first.

It might propose more Chinooks for the Army, or Ospreys for a Joint unit. Or
a mix of C27s and AC27s.

Time will tell.

Please !! No Ospreys although a great IDEA
some maturity and Zillions of Dollars to go yet

Agreed, Ospreys as a replacement for Caribous? Consider how the Caribous are
used........an Osprey couldn't compete in the majority of environments.

Consider the timing. Announce the Caribou retirement some weeks out from the
Australian Avalon Airshow. Given how hard the Spartan was pushing the
concept of a replacement to the Caribou last time around, wouldn't surprise
me if a 'sudden' announcement is made then...

Hmmmmmmmmmm I shall not give odds on what you say .

But think you are correct -although the announcement will give heaps of
folks some heart burn

The USMC is using them on operations in Iraq. If there are any problems, I

As i said Early Days and if production ramps up Zillions of dollars
and the platform by normal definition is not yet mature in service .
This does impugn the type it is just common sense .

Operational wear and tear and the subsequent mods that all aircraft
get defines a platform maturing , does it not.

Speaking of Maturity the Old Bous now that is maturity eh :)

Given Time ,money ,more money and operational feedback the machine
should either reach its stated parameters or who knows .

Personally I love the concept .

Caribou A4-140 is earmarked for the Australian War Memorial.

140 was the first one delivered and was flown home by the CO - Trevor
Fairbairn.

? Who

Mr Fairbairn?

Sorry, I don't know any Fairbairns that maybe famous.

The one who perished when the RAAF aircraft he was a passenger in crashed
on the approach to Canberra's RAAF Base, now called Fairbairn. He (J.V.
Fairbairn) was the Minister of State for Air from 13/11/39 to 13/8/40. Or
the one (D.E. Fairbairn) who was Minister of State for Air 4/8/62 to
10/6/64. See also:

Sorry, was not thinking of Canberra....
Dont know if he was related, I will ask.
