BAA urged to appeal over commission sell-off ruling
Colin Donald, Business Editor, Sunday Herald Online 22/03/09
SCOTTISH CHAMBERS of Commerce, the umbrella group that represents more than
9000 large, medium and small employers in Scotland, has urged BAA to appeal
the Competition Commission's ruling that it must sell either Edinburgh or
Glasgow airport within two years.
Liz Cameron, chief executive of Scottish Chambers, whose members employ
more than 50% of all private sector workers in Scotland, said that the body
saw "grounds for appeal" by BAA.
Gordon Dewar, managing director of BAA's Edinburgh Airport, earlier told
the Sunday Herald that he had reacted to last week's final report with
"resigned disappointment" and said that the Spanish-owned company would
take up to two months to consider its options after studying the 800-page
report.
A majority of business organisations in Scotland are opposed to the forced
sale of one of the two main central belt airports in the currentclimate,
and there have been complaints that their submissions were not fully
reflected in the final report.

The situation cannot be compared to Scotland in any shape or form.
BAA in London = Monopoly
BAA in Scotland = Monopoly
In your opinion

"Its seven airports account for 60 percent of passengers across the
UK, but this rises to 88 per cent in lowland Scotland and 90 per cent
in the south-east of England."
Dunno about you but I'd consider 88% and 90% quite conclusive in my
reasoning to use the word "monopoly".

Quite a lot to compare in my opinion.
The very limited market and amount of airports in Scotland make the two
situations non-comparable.
|
Limited market? BAA should bin their development plans then. What was
it they predicted again? 24mmpa for EDI and 18mppa for GLA or
something?
Makes you wonder, if they are making up these figures for the sake of
making themselves look good, then perhaps they are also talking BS
about their reasons for keeping a hold of EDI, GLA and ABZ.

Why does selling LGW improve things for the travelling public yet
selling GLA or EDI does not?

The situation is the same in the respect that BAA have a huge monopoly
in London, just like Scotland. So why do BAA react differently?

Well, opinions are what these news groups are all about. Jim is
entitled to express his, same as you and everyone else.
For what it's worth, I happen to agree with Jim's opinion, and clearly
so do many other interested parties. It will be for the courts to
decide whether the case has been soundly and legally made. |

Because they accept that the evidence proves that by selling LGW the
travelling public WILL benefit. They do not accept that this has been
proven in Scotland and are willing to quite rightly fight this flawed
decision.
I do not accept that the travelling public WILL benefit by selling off
either EDI or GLA - quite the opposite. You could argue that BAA are
operating a `monopoly` at EDI without direct competition. You most
certainly cannot argue that case at GLA and the CC acknowledge that in
their report. |

Well it's quite a similar figure right enough.
Anyhow, while BAA might feel like appealing, Ferrovial probably won't let
them.
|
I am not too sure about that. I believe they might want to get rid of all
three Scottish airport as a job lot to one buyer - that can only happen if
they win an appeal. |

I would suggest that the case most certainly hasn't been soundly and
legally made if the evidence such a large and important group was dismissed
out of hand. |
