We're having a little conversation in one of the other NGs about how to synch
the props to remove that annoying wow-wow-wow noise. I've always done it by ear
in a twin but have no idea how it'd be done in a 4 engine transport or bomber.
Any of you old fahts care to tackle this?

On the P-3 the Flight Engineer had a knob he turned. You could
actually feel the prop virbration move fore and aft in the aircraft as
he synched them up. I had one FE that liked to set the vibrations at
the SS-3 (RADAR) station, until I threatened him with having a severe
RADAR malfunction while doing thunderstorm avoidance...
Even in up to the mid-90s the prop synchrophaser box used tube
technology.
