Unusual experimental engine with cylinders parallel to output shaft. A
piston can be seen in the cut-away at upper left.

The design was intended to allow for a more streamlined engine
nacelle.

What was the engine intended for- what a/c?

It looks like a variant of the Dyna-Cam engine, certificated in the US,
in 1947.

Piper tested one in the 1970s, but nothing came of it.

http://www.sandersonengine.com/leads to a lot of material based on
arraying the cylinders in a parallel configuration and using an
interesting linkage/wobble plate to convert the piston's motion to
rotation. This website contains material extolling the virtues of
such an arrangement. Besides allowing close packing of the cylinders,
they claim easier balancing and variable stroke/compression.

As noted re this russian engine, the parallel stroke configuration
seems attractive for hydraulic pumps

John

I think that the afformentioned "wobble plate" is
often called a swash plate. I suspect that
there have been several Internal COmbustion
engine designs that utilise them in addition
to hydrualic pumps/motors and helicopter
main rotor controls.

The design is usually called a barrel engine. They have been designed

and built and filed to succeed for the past 70 years or so. FWIW the
Vickers variable hydraulic pump/motor uses the same general design
where the (swash) wobble plate angle can be varied from zero to 45
degrees to control the piston stroke and thus flow volume of the
device. When used as a motor, as in zero-turn mowers, moving a
steering lever controls the wobble plate to vary hydraulic flow.

Still, what Russian a/c was to use this type of engine? The Monino
info I provided is theirs and it was for a more streamlined engine
nacelle...

No time period is given.

Any speculation on at least the type of a/c that would use this?
Monino is primarily for military a/c.
