"Chain Lightning", even more expensive to build than the P-38, with not
enough of a boost in overal performance.

But a nifty looking aircraft, none the less.

Sorry Steve,

Incorrect. The photo is indeed the Lockheed XP-49 engine testbed of
1940 and NOT a XP-58 Chain Lighning of 1944: http://aerofiles.com/lock-xp49..jpg

P-49 1940 = P-38 as high-altitude engine test-bed; two 1600hp
Continental IV-1430; length: 40'1" load: 3286# v: 458/262/x range:
680. POP: 1 as XP-49 [40-3055].

XP-58: http://aerofiles.com/lock-xp58.jpg

P-58 Chain Lightning 1944 = 2pCmwM rg; two paired Allison V-3240;
span: 70'0" v: 430; ff: 6/6/44. Larger version of P-38 with tail
turret and 75mm nose cannon as escort fighter. POP: 1 as XP-58
[41-2670].

Two different a/c...

- info from Aerofiles (Lockheed)
