Used the newly revived Glasgow to London City route this week, so I
thought it might be worth a report.
I did a day return on Thursday this week, leaving on the 07:00 flight
and returning on the 18:00.
Outward bound there was very little to remark on, BA are using the RJ100
fleet for this service, in reality because there is no room to park
aircraft overnight at LCY and they want to expand their services from
there. The Glasgow flights are a side effect, and a very welcome one for
me. Not seen any publicity or promotion as yet, but the fares are very
low, if you don't choose the 18:30 to fly back on! Anyway, the flight
boarded on time from Gate 20 and we were ready at 07:00, however the
slot time allocated was 07:25 and we sat for 20 mins before pushback.
This is frustratingly common these days. It was about 40% loaded, I
counted 45 passengers, so not good loads. The usual breakfast in flight
and a five minute late arrival at City. As it is such a small airport I
was out and on the DLR to the office within 7 minutes of arrival.
The return was not a nice experience. City is getting very crowded in
the peak evening departure and Thursday was the worst I have
experienced. The security queue snaked all the way from the escalator
away from security through the business centre (for those of you that
know LCY) and then back past the escalator. Eventually the escalator was
blocked but was not switched off, very unsafe with people arriving into
a crush at the top and not being able to walk off! I would judge that
the airport is now beyond its capacity at this peak evening time (16:50
when I arrived). Eventually getting through (it took 25 mins), the
flight was called at Gate 2c, and we were kept in the crushed little
gate area for more than 20 minutes, not a good experience. The return
was well filled with more than 80 passengers (I think these RJs have 102
seats?) and most surprisingly a hot evening meal was served, something
long gone on the Gatwick flights. An on time arrival at Glasgow
completes the picture.
Nice that these flights are back - it makes my life much easier. I
recommend taking a look at them for London trips if you are booking in
advance as this return cost me only £114 inclusive. Remember London City
is closed on Saturdays and shuts early at night.

Good to hear of a better load on the return flight John. Security at
LCY sounds chaotic! I think the RJ's hold 110 passengers.

Thanks for the report. Well I am sure that the loads will increase,
the prices certainly have started to go up that's for sure, a good
sign. I know that on my next Milan trip I am going to try and route
via LCY ;-)

Gaz, I am pleased that the peak loads are good, as it might help to
ensure that the flights stay around this time. Thanks for the info on
the RJs, I know there are 19 rows, but they are not all of six!

I have just booked a Tuesday day return for July. My office wanted me
to go Easyjet to Stansted but after a nightmare jurney last time on
the Stansted Express I asked for the city Airport flights. I have a
small question for you guys I need to get to Aldgate East Station on
the Hamersmith Line. What is the easiest route and can you buy a
return ticket that works on the DLR and Underground.

Ian,
Tickets are interchangeable between the DLR and Underground. The fare
system is integrated. More information (and the route planner) at
www.tfl.gov.uk. For the lowest fare I would recommend getting a pay as
you go Oyster card, as this reduces fares by up to 50% on many on the
journeys I make. If you dont want to do that, there are ticket machines
and a ticket office at London City Airport station which is just outside
the main door of the airport. You can buy a return or a travelcard at
the machines or the office.
On the route I think I would go DLR to Canning Town, change to the
Jubilee for one stop to West Ham and then the Hammersmith and City or
District. That route keeps you out of central London.

Actually a change to the Jubilee at Canning Town might work better. I
don't recall if the DLR trains go direct to Canary Wharf or whether
they go to Bank/Tower Gateway.
An alternative: ride the DLR to Bank and switch to the Waterloo & City
line. |
