500,000th passenger for Emirates Glasgow service

Apr 25 2007

By alasdair northrop

Emirates Airline's Scottish service to Dubai has become the carrier's
fastest growing UK route by flying 500,000 passengers in just three
years.

No other Emirates UK route has reached the milestone so quickly.......

At this rate it might not be too long before EDI gets it's own EK service?

I think EDI's chance had gone as soon as the airline chose Newcastle
as it's next UK destination. With the news about the continuing
success of it's GLA operation I think it's far more likely now to be a
2x daily service from Glasgow ! ;-)

Well, wasn't that the theory when Newcastle developed an easyJet hub - a few
wishful thinkers tried to claim that it was curtains for EDI in terms of
future easyJet expansion, but clearly nothing could be further from the
truth. The same when certain others claimed, a few years back, that CO would
never come to EDI and also serve GLA.

Personally I believe EK is such a big airline, and DXB such an important
destination, that they won't ignore EDI forever. They're fleet is about to
expand significantly in the coming years, and they'll be looking to expand
right across the UK. They'll do it when the time is right.

Cue `when they provide facilities` post :-(

Now if anyone can work out what load factor would be needed for a 2 to
3 weekly A310 operating DXB-FRA-MAN for 3 years to achieve 500,000
passengers, I'd be delighted. My reckoning suggests about 300%!

Our 500,000th passenger would have occurred toward the back end of
December 1998, the routing having started in November 1990.

I'd also be extremely skeptical about this as the only other airport
(currently) that the GLA service can be compared with is BHX.

And you complain about JC trolling? *sigh*
How can you compare the GLA service to MAN,LHR and LGW? None of which
started on a daily basis. So whilst the reporting may be technically
true, the only other airport that could have been compared to was BHX.

I don't think the NCL decision effects the Scottish ops at all. The NE of
England obviously has a sizeable market which EK fancy.

And don't forget what happened to BHX. They announced it would go
double daily - and then all of a sudden it was postponed due to the
fact the aircraft was to be utilised elsewhere (they got extra LHR
slots) - and the BHX 2nd daily service was postponed in favour of a
further LHR service. The 2nd BHX service started when more aircraft
arrived. Still - look at how many aircraft EK have on the way ...
something like that shouldn't happen again hopefully.

Indeed. I believe EK even announced a CPH service then got dropped due
to lack of a/c.

Can't remember the exaxt years when the service was altered. About
1991/1992 it then operated through CDG and then to ZRH about 1994ish
with a couple of non-stop services appearing 1995/1996. Think the
A300s mingled with A310s regularly from about 1992 though they did
operate occasionally before then. Think it went to daily non-stop
only in 2001.

A bit stingy IMHO, surely a free ticket up the front would have been
more appropriate - then again probably no room. ;-)

Crawford

I thought so too.
