Bmi challenge to BA

BMI has revealed plans to go head-to-head with British Airways in the
lucrative transatlantic market by launching routes to the United
States from its hub at Heathrow early next year.

Any thoughts on likely destinations?

I would have thought NYC is completely saturated. Washington and Chicago
seem obvious choices, being major hubs for Star Alliance. How about San
Francisco too?

Saturated or not, NY is a large market and bmi will want their share of it.

Interested that they want to give it a go rather than auctioning their LHR
slots.

Maybe. Another Star Alliance carrier (United) actually discontinued service
from LHR to JFK, so I wonder what BD's prospects would be? I still think a
Star hub will be their priority - probably Washington DC.

I honestly believe that UA will lean heavily on BD and forceably
instruct them NOT to launch routes to any of their hubs as this would
dilute their own profits on those services. Therefore, we may be
looking at the likes of Charlotte (unless USAirways wants to launch
LHR services!), Miami and JFK.

And the biggest they will make would be to abandon MAN in favour of
LHR if they are unable to source A330s, only to return in 3 to 4 years
as an established player in the transatlantic market. Other airline
(notably Virgin) will pick up their slack at MAN - the Caribbean and
Las Vegas routes look a cast-iron certainty for VS 747s and the ORD
route may be suited for an A340-300 with 787s taking over (and adding
other business routes).
