Hi

I am student of aircraft maintenence engineering.

we have the cessna 152 aircraft.
I saw that the dip stick for the fuel tank is caliberated diffrently
for left and right fuel tank.

why is this so? please help.

Oops!

I am currently grounded for medical reasons but when I flew I used a
single dipstick with only one calibration for both tanks. There could
be a difference between the shape of the tanks resulting in different
calibrations.

What about your dipsticks? Is there a significant difference? Or does
it only result in a few minutes of flight time if you use the wrong
one? Are they calibrated by manufacturer or by your FBO / flight
school?

And a final tip: Ask your instructor. And us his answer, please!

Generally the plane is symmetrical. This one may have a bit of

a problem where it isn't. It doesn't take much of a tilt (or
even not parking on level ground) to make a large difference
in the calibration. These tanks are very broad and shallow.

More likely they are calibrated differently for different planes and
someone somewhere along the way got a little confused.

The Cessna 152 has either two 20 gallon tanks or two 15 gallon tanks.
Maybe yours has one of each? :-)

I could not tell why yours has two dipsticks without looking at the plane.

Do you mean that the measurements you took from each tank were
different using the same gauge? Is the airplane on level ground?

Sounds a bit like the left handed screw driver or the striped paint, pehaps

He was probably referring to the Fuel Gauges, such as the type sold by
Sporty's Pilot Shop (Item Number:3596A). Sorta looks like a "dipstick".

Dipstick-
You didn't leave a name so how should I call you? If a pilot is going
to fly a particular machine, it is always a good idea to know that
particular machine. As a practical matter, I often calibrated a
"dipstick" for fuel in that specific machine. It required some time
and effort to drain fuel, then add fuel in measured amounts and
measure it with a wooden dowel inserted to a specific point or angle
with the appropriate marks made. This is not a common procedure in
general aviation or club flying. It is VERY common in utility flying
when we often have to know EXACTLY what kind of fuel or weight we are
carrying.
If you are using any of the common commercialy available "fuel
dipstick", how do you determine if it applies to your specific
airplane? Only the forementioned drain/measure/add/mark method will
work. Unless your normal flying requires a careful consideration for
specific fuel consumption, it should not be a real concern.
But, for your studies in engineering, perhaps my note will give you
something to think about?
Most factory aircraft have the same components. If a fuel tank
capacity is changed I'm certain the manufacturer will be aware of it?
I have little faith in float gauges and/or fuel unit senders when it
comes to fuel remaining. I want to know EXACTLY how much fuel I have
on board and the specific fuel burn for THAT" airplane. Even then what
is to say a fuel line can't get loose and start losing fuel out the
belly where you can't see it? The only time I trust the fuel gauges is
when they are indicating low fuel.
For your specific question about right/left being different, it will
of course depend on if you are level when you take the measurement.
Some common sense will go a long way.

? Maybe you meant a C-172? 'Cause a C-152 with that kind of fuel load
would have very little useful load remaining for pilot and pax.

The C-152's I've flown typically hold 12 gals (useable/actually 12.5
useable) on each side with a total capacity of about 26 gallons.
