Here's a few quick snaps from EDI and GLA today. I popped in briefly
en-route to Dunfermline.

www.flyglasgowdirect.co.uk/260407.htm

As promised I timed the M8 sectors just to keep us right:
GLA (abeam GLA after diversion to Linwood and back) - Charing X = 10 minutes
(dep 9am)
Charing X - "Welcome to Livingston" sign = 25 minutes
Livi - EDI = 10 minutes
EDI (Newbridge) - GLA = 45 minutes (dep noon)

I'm interested to know what kit you are using, as the quality of your
shots looks excellent to me and photography is my second hobby.

It's not as good as I would like because it's a relatively cheap Canon EF
75-300mm lens. My shots seem to suffer a lot from my Photoshop treatment
when I reduce them to 1024px for the web. Being self taught, I'm never quite
sure if I'm doing it as well as possible. When shooting the same old planes
over and over again, I guess the fun is in trying to get a better shot than
before. The camera is a Canon 350D which is perfectly good.

Thon Delta 767 at EDI must be the most photographed flight out of
Scotland (along with the EK 77W)

Indeed.

I couldn't hang around for it to move so I had to make that unflattering
shot and be off.

I don't know if Photoshop has different algorithms it can use for
resizing, but you could try the following ideas:

1) Make the first thing you do with the image in Photoshop is to save
it as a .psd. Resize that and save in a new name, possibly apply a
bit of sharpening. Finally save as a .jpg - the algorithms for
the .jpg compression can do a lot of damage if you open, alter, save,
open, alter save and so on. Also, you can certainly choose different
levels of compression for .jpg files and obviously the more the
compression the more damage is done to the final image.

2) if you are taking .jpg files with the Canon, experiment with RAW
files again saving intially as a .psd in Photoshop.

3) Read the Photoshop help to see if it offers choices you aren't
using!

4) Hunt around for free resizing programs on the Internet. Two I know
of are IrfanView, and EasyThumbnails.

I don't have Photoshop, but I do take 35mm slides and scan them to
a .tif with a Nikon film scanner, and the first thing I do with them
in the editor program after correcting sloping horizons and minimal
cropping is save in the program's native mode. Changes are made using
layers, sharpening is left until last. HTH.

Yes, it's food for thought. I might go experiment now with the .psd stage
Wink
I shoot in maximum .jpg format which gives 2-3MB images but after levelling
I often set the crop size to 1024 px then do the levels and sharpening.
Dunno whether it makes a difference to set the dimensions for the crop in
inches, do the levels etc then resize to 1024px at the end. I only save the
edited image once and choose the least compression, assuming that most folk
now have broadband for quick enough loading at around 500KB.

Every time you save in JPG you reduce quality. Full size SLRs have the
processing capacity to shoot in RAW fairly fast ... your storage on the
camera might suffer but as long as you get a decent speed to be ready
for the next image, use it. Cats' advice is right.

Abbotsinch is off topic here..

No it's not. Saying so is a waste of time and energy. It also drives quality
down and conflict up. Just before you left you made it clear that non-EDI
airports are perfectly topical (you quoted ABZ in that instance). Not that
you get to dictate but you were right enough. EDI doesn't operate in a
bubble so other airports will be mentioned form time to time and very often
anyone interested enough in aviation to be reading here will be interested
enough in the wider picture - in this case just some aircraft photo's for
those interested in such things. If the mention of one airport in particular
riles you, that's your look out. Nobody else will feel sufficiently
disturbed as to demonstrate their anxiety. If they did they'd be similarly
up a gum tree. It's preposterous to think that you can force your personal
agenda on everyone else any more than any other individual could take it
upon himself to decide.

Clive. Please do not ever try to persuade me that he is worth consideration

again. Less than 40 hours and he HAS to have attention.FFS ...Am I being
unreasonable? He's 3000 miles away and still talks shi8te.

Imagine "Hello Son. Just travelled across the Atlantic. Great to see you.
Really missed you and the family. Tell me about yourself and all that has
been happening the past year? What do we have planned for the next week or
so?..Great to see the grandchildren. What do you think about.. So good to be
here. Now get out of my way because I NEED to check out MY newsgroup. Gimme
access, this is important."

It won't be far away from the truth.

I think it's more like 5000 miles :-)

No doubt those that are quick to criticise certain others will be along
shortly to voice their concern...
