|
|
For the dates of 3-31 and 4-1, there were 38 posts made, that I did not have
in my kill file. Out of them, 30 were tainted by the troll.
I would say that about does it.
Point. Game. Match.
Sad.
All because people keep responding. Now everyone else is gone.
I broke my "no comment" promise.
BFD. Who cares. It did no good, and now I don't care.
RAP is next. I give it a week or two, to be about like this group.
Sad.

Far be it from me to take on the role of Usenet Police and try to advise
people on how to run their newsgroup. That's a decision that has to be made
by each and every one of you personally.
I will tell you this however, and you can take this to the bank FWIW to you.
If you people don't start ignoring those who are destroying your newsgroup,
and I mean IGNORING them, this group, and others as well that are under the
same attack, will simply changeover from what they have been in the past; a
source of educational discourse and friendly dialog exchange, into something
that will result in no one being left here but those who destroyed the
group.
If this is what each of you desire, as I said before, far be it from me to
prevent you from achieving it.
If I were you....ALL of you.....I'd stop right here and give what's
happening to your group some very real thought.

Hi Dudley,
Any more it's very difficult to respond to any thread and not find it
has been "polluted". < ) (some have opinions on every thing and a
search of Usenet can show SOME cast a very wide net indeed) Yet many
of these are valid threads and certainly deserve responses. Some
times I find due to the attributes/quotes being mislabeled I'm
responding to a poster other than the one to which I though I was
responding.
Certain elements of the group, or posters if you will, are becoming
(have become) so polarized that responding to a polluted thread is the
same as responding to a specific poster or it is to them. Some of
those posters have much shorter fuses than others which is just part
of life.
"To me" the bickering is doing far more damage to the group than one
or two "know it all" posters.
IF we think the group is dead, then for those who think so, it is when
in reality it is just wounded. How bad depends on each individual's
viewpoint.
Like you, I think ignoring the poster in question is the way to go,
but ignoring contaminated threads is almost impossible and in many
cases not desirable. In those cases the responses need to be thought
out to address the original question, or even some thread drift. Then
hope the attributes and quotes are correct. As I said above, a number
of times I've found I had not responded to who I though.

Valid points Rog;
I think it probably boils down to using the group intelligently....picking
your topics.....studying the thread carefully to insure proper response,
then either responding or passing based on that intelligent approach.

This is why I had to give up my attempts to "killfile", and switched to |
"Mark as Read".
It's far from perfect; but the threads remain more readable, and I know who
I've missed, and I can save the soap opera until I feel like reading it
or... (my server has poor retention).

I dunno, I took a week off to see if things improved and they got worse
so I'm thinking I'll go fly for a bit and try again in a few months and
see if there's a newsgroup left.
it's just not much fun to wade through all the crap anymore.
I thought Allen was going overboard by bailing out but now I'm thinking
he's wiser than most.

Bingo. For me, it's all a matter of what I choose to spend time
reading. Some folks I'll always read. Others...little, if ever.
Liberal use of ignoring a thread and/or marking the entire thread as
read work for me.
Over time, trolls come and go, new/valid posts increase and decrease,
people get pissed off and leave...then maybe come back. I fail to see
why so many folks get their panties in a bunch over all of it.
