If recommended, what is the alternative for navigation? If required,
what GPS unit do people use?

Not required, but highly recommended. For VFR you can't beat the Garmin
296. It will tell you everything you need to know - and then some.

Thanks Martha. How would you fly otherwise? For more context, I have
never been at the controls of any non-RC aircraft before.

I don't know, but people seem to have been doing just fine for the
last , what, 90 years of flight before we had GPS.

Hint: Maps. Windows. Eyes.

Do people use Jeppesen charts, or would a good gazetteer do?

Before flying you should always consult a sectional chart and call
1800WXBRIEF to see if there are any TFRs in the area. In addition to
that a good gazetteer is fine.

I use a simple and cheap GPS (Garmin 12).
