Getting closer.

Had another lesson on the weekend. Beautiful day, hardly any breeze on the
ground. Was surprised at how much there was up at circuit height.
We were using rwy 35 instead of 17, which is one I've not taken off or
landed on before. I like 17 because of the visual references on approach.
Nice tall line of pine trees right before the fence etc. Was good to try the
opposite direction, and interesting to come in over a busy main road, with
cars and trucks doing their best to distract you when you're about to touch
down.
Handled it all with no problems however, and even managed to deal with an
unexpected crosswind gust right before one of the touchdowns. Instructor was
nicely impressed. She says that next week, we'll do simulated emergency
landings and go-arounds, and then get this! She said "Then I reakon you're
ready for your first solo!"
Now, I know I'm VERY low hours (5.5 hours now), but I do feel ready for it.
I don't feel I'm being rushed, or anything like that, as I'm sure some here
will suggest or claim. I guess as long as I'm comfortable with it, and she
thinks I'm ready, then that's all that matters. I run through the procedures
in my head all day every day, and it seems to keep me fresh by the time the
next lesson comes around.
So, it looks like Santa's bringing me my solo, and I'm happier than a boy
with his first bike!

Sounds like you're doing just fine CL, and from what you write here, your
instructor is just fine also. When you're ready, BOTH you AND your
instructor have to know it and know it at the same point in time, and I'm
sure that is exactly the way it will happen for you.

If it happens, you may very well set the record here for fewest hours to
solo.

Do we know anybody here who has soloed in 6 hours?

It used to be not uncommon. When airports were grass strips with no traffic
and all you had to know was how to take off and land. These days you
generally need to know a lot more to solo safely. I recall one poor student
who had a twin do a gearup landing on the only runway while she was on
downwind on her first solo! What do you do if they close the airport for an
indefinate period in the middle of your first solo? She had enough time
under her belt to calmly inform her instructor who was standing on the
ground in a brown swivet ( similiar to a blue Funk to all you pilot types! )
that she was going to fly over to a nearby airport and continue her solo
series over there. She did so, and the instructor drove over and met her
after her third circuit with a bottle of champagne! :-)
