I just saw a documentary on Discovery Channel about Rutan's Spaceship, the
canard winged 6-8 passenger composite airplane that was developed in the
1980's.
I am a non-pilot but am an aviation enthusiast. This sure is an
interesting aircraft! I love it. It's a shame that most of the Spaceships
are being stored in a scrapyard, awaiting their doom. They were deemed to
be a marketplace failure. The price for a Starship turned out to be higher
than entry level business jets. But they did have cutting edge features --
like all glass instruments. There's a guy that bought up a bunch of
Starship spare parts that had been leftover and also he bought a lot of
spare body parts, so he figures he has enough parts to keep his Starship
flying for the rest of his lifetime. I think he runs a charter flight
service with his Starship. He flew it out to show Burt Rutan, and Burt
Rutan hired him to be the chase pilot/plane for the SpaceShipOne program.
