Now we have news of the recent, supposedly real-world, terrorist plot to destroy

commercial airplanes by smuggling onboard the benign precursors to a deadly
explosive, and mixing up a batch of liquid death in the lavatories. So, The
Register has got to ask, were these guys for real, or have they, and the
counterterrorist officials supposedly protecting us, been watching too many
action movies?

We're told that the suspects were planning to use TATP, or triacetone
triperoxide, a high explosive that supposedly can be made from common household
chemicals unlikely to be caught by airport screeners. A little hair dye, drain
cleaner, and paint thinner - all easily concealed in drinks bottles - and the
forces of evil have effectively smuggled a deadly bomb onboard your plane.

Or at least that's what we're hearing, and loudly, through the mainstream media
and its legions of so-called "terrorism experts."...............................

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/08/17/flying_toilet_terror_labs/

And then read this...............................................

Should we be worried about the threat from organised terrorism or is it simply a

phantom menace being used to stop society from falling apart?

In the past our politicians offered us dreams of a better world. Now they
promise to protect us from nightmares.

The most frightening of these is the threat of an international terror network.
But just as the dreams were not true, neither are these nightmares

While the article on TATP is interesting, it totally misses (or omits) some
crucial points.

In assessing the threat, the first question is not whether the terrorists
can succeed as planned, it's whether or not they will endanger even one
passenger on a flight. Otherwise, you would have to conclude that the
miserable failure of the Shoe Bomber proves that we don't need to be on the
lookout for tennis shoes with the special "Jihad hot foot" mod. And why
worry about someone bringing a hand grenade on board - hey, we've had plenty
of accidents such as Aloha, and even bombs going off, without bringing the
plane down.

The second question is, did they intend harm? Unless your government is
totally fabricating this story, the answer is yes. So there still are bad
guys out there who want to bring down airliners, even if their grasp of
chemistry may be somewhat challenged (although you cannot dismiss at this
point the possibility that they've solved this problem to the extent that
they might actually pull it off).

The third question goes to success as measured by the terrorists. Sure, the
goal may be to crash the airplane, but the continuing damage from 9/11, over
and above the deaths, was the economic harm and the PR value for the
terrorists. You don't need to kill an airliner to kill the industry, just
scare the bejeesus out of the public. And they know that.

I'll be kind and assume that the reporter knows all that and was just
focusing on his one new angle, that brewing up binary explosives in a lav
isn't as easy as some may think.

As to the editorial suggesting that the whole reaction to terrorism is just
a propaganda campaign concocted by evil politicians, well, there's no doubt
that opportunistic (and yeah, even evil) pols may be riding the wave, but
they didn't create it. Just because the pols are overstating the case for
their own purposes doesn't mean that terrorists aren't out to get us. How
else do you explain London and Madrid and the 9/11 attacks, not to mention
all the others that barely registered on our Western mindsets?

The West's policies and actions can be soundly criticized on their own
merits, we don't need no steenkin' conspiracy theories to whack Bush et al.
upside the head when they do wrong.
