Jon,
The total is probably closer to $25K to get to an IFR panel, but it is
significant as you point out. There really aren't any of my aircraft
available on the market with IFR panels, so its more of a decision of
whether I want this plane to be IFR capable in the long term.
After talking with the avionics shop today and looking at their demo
396, I may go the route you suggested anyway. Unfortunately now I want
a transponder upgrade so I can get the TIS traffic on the 396.
Thanks,
Eric

Yea after I sent the post I figured that 50 AMU's was probably pretty
high... As far as the 396 goes I think that is a good choice, Sorry I
cost you more cash by wanting the TIS traffic upgrade... :-)

Let's see - a week of camping, and only one t-shirt. Maybe we should
arrange a particular day when we're all supposed to wear the shirt?
Wednesday Night is the traditional rec.aviation party at OSH, hosted by
Mary and me, Jim & Tami Burns, and Montblack. It's held at our
campsite in the North 40 airplane camping area, and there is always
plenty of good food and camaraderie. Your admission cost is a 6-pack
of GOOD beer. (Bring Miller Lite, or anything that looks too much like
"love in a canoe", and you'll be buying a round at Friar Tuck's!)
Might I suggest we wear Dan's "uniform of the day" t-shirt on
Wednesday?

I think I'll stick to my older rec.aviation shirt (if I can find it). |
Anyone remember the "Slips with Flaps" shirts? I'm presenting a forum

Jon,
That's alright, I won't be getting the Garmin 330 transponder this time
around, but I might put one in next year so I won't give you any grief
until I actually spend the money... I saw your Mooney on Jay's Rouge's
Gallery page. Looks like you have a really nice IFR plane with the G430
and the stormscope. I see you are based in Indy. I used to live in
Cincinnati & flew over to Muncie & Columbus a lot for breakfast &
lunch. Lots of nice airports in that area.
Thanks,
Eric

Tch. I've still got my "Air USENET" patches, and my Rec.aviation T-shirt with
the pilot wings with the "@" in the middle.

No, the new Udvar-Hazy center...massive place, right down the road from Dulles
airport. Free admission ($12 parking). More of an "airplane nut"
place...planes basically just parked, no dioramas or superfluous stuff. More
emphasis on lesser-known aircraft.
They've also got some of Patty Wagstaff's stuff....

A few other things to consider. If the impulse couplings in the magneto are
not working, you will not get a hot enough spark to start the engine.
The original aluminum power cables that were installed in the Cherokees
develop high resistance with age and cause weak cranking and a difficult
start when the engine is flooded. Replacing them with copper gives an
impressive improvement in cranking power.

| Quote: | Perhaps somebody here has an idea about this little problem.
A few weeks ago, shortly after annual, I tried to start our Cherokee 140.
It kicked for a few revs, and then failed to start no matter what I did.
I noticed the aux fuel pump kept pumping, as if it was not building
pressure. The primer seemed to have fuel. I noticed fuel on the carpet
and leaking outside below the aux pump. We had our mechanic replace the
aux pump gasket a few days later. I then flew the plane twice after that
without any problems.
So today (a gorgeous day, by the way), my partner and I are going to fly.
We try to start the plane and it kicks once, then fails to start. We try
more primer. We try flooded procedures. Eventually the plane is cranking
slowly due to weakened battery. We get the car over and jump the plane.
We try everything. There is no fuel leak anywhere. There is no smell of
fuel anywhere. Aux fuel pump keeps clicking as if pressure is not being
built up, but no leaks. Primer feels like it is pumping fuel into
cylinders. Sumping fuel reveals no water. We try switching tanks. Once
the first kick happened, NOTHING would get it to fire.
So we're planning a long XC in a couple of weeks. I'm concerned that even
if our mechanic does something, we might still not have it fixed and then
we could get stuck at some podunk airport. Although I thought the problem
had been fixed previously, the symptoms are the same, minus apparent fuel
leaks anywhere.
It acts like it's not getting fuel. The fact that the initial crank fired
suggests it's not electrical. But the fact that the primer feels like
it's pumping fuel means it should fire after priming, at least for a bit.
Anybody have good ideas?
Thanks in advance. |

Are you familiar with the panel mounts at airgizmos.com? They might
help make it look tidy.

I have the 396 and agree it is an excellent choice as your one and only GPS if
you can live without RNAV approaches.
I've seen the airgizmo thing and if you can get it past the FAA I think it's a
great concept. I'm not aware of any installations in GA aircraft, I think the
avionics shops are still afraid of them. I don't know what kind of certification
hoops you have to jump through for your warbird.
BTW, has anyone seen one of the airgizmo mounts that's been blessed by a FSDO
for other than homebuilt?
