I wondered why October was chosen. Presumably the Dept would like to
randomise the renewal dates so as to avoid the log-jam that happened
this time. Maybe they chose the month from our birth dates to set the
expiry date? (My birthday is in October).
If my speculation is correct, then the Department needs to make a
financial adjustment at the next renewal to allow for the variation in
renewal dates. These bloody "tickets to fly" are expensive enough
without being cheated of several month's use.
What's on your ASIC? Does it match your month of birth?

I applied for my ASIC last november. Expiry date is June 07. This
co-insides with the same month my AVID expires. All though the AVID is
valid a lot longer.

I believe I'm being penalised for having applied for an AVID and they
use the same background checks for the ASIC hence the earlier expiry
date.

Is this to light up cloud formations ahead ?

Also used to see if the aicraft is in cloud. If so, anti-ice is switched on
if required!

Some clouds, and systems of thunderstorms are very nasty because they

Considering the original poster is uneasy about turbulence, this is not what
they
want to hear.

Fortunately, pilots are aware of the dangers of thuderstorms, and avoid them
totally!

The issue arises because they took soooo long to process and issue the
things that they are part out of date at the time of issue. The
security parameters/legislation require the ASIC to be valid for two
years from teh date of teh security check - not teh issue of teh card.
However, in my case I complained to the ombudsman (online) and they are
being required to do teh security check again and issue it forthwith or
refund the money.
I suggest you lodge a complaint with the ombudsman.

Mine expires in April 07 which means I lose 12 months. CLARC has said that
the expiry is taken from when the AFP check was completed, so if you applied
for an AVID months before the ASIC than that is when the expiry is set. A
bloody joke.
Mitchell

they charged you money for the ASIC & security check right?

They sure did (i'm not really sure why it was the 6th AFP check I have
completed in the last 5 years)

The lights on the wings are probably the lights to illuminate the wing
leading edges to see if they are picking up ice. As for the strobes, once
the aircraft lines up on the runway for take off, through to until the
aircraft taxis of the runway the strobes will be on. Even during the day! It
may seem like they are switched on every now and then because usually you
can't see the strobes, they are shielded so as not to blind the pilot at
night, however, at night if you enter cloud the strobes reflect of the cloud
making them very visible. Some aircraft are placarded to switch off strobes
whilst in cloud for this reason.

Just had a look at the Adelaide Airport website which claims that
Adelaide is A380 capable. What does this actually mean ? That the
runway will take the extra weight ?I can't imagine any reason why an
A380 would need to go to Adelaide except as an emergency alternative.Do
they have double decker aerobridges ?

Just about all airports are A380 capable - for arrivals only! You can put it
down anywhere, but getting it out is another matter......
