As a 17-year-old male living in Long Island, New York i've had a secret
lifelong desire to take up the relatively unusual hobby of hang
gliding. despite my best efforts, i haven't been able to find any
decent information regarding how and where to get started in my area,
etc. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dan,
Welcome. Here is where to find HG instructors and HG schools in the USA:
http://www.ushga.org/whereto.asp
and there are a few more good links, at the bottom of my web page, linked
below.

P.S. Free advice, and maybe worth the price,
for new and low-time HG pilots,

There's a lot of hang gliding in upstate NY, closest place to you I
think is Ellenville, and there is a school there.
It's about 60 miles from NYC, IIRC.
