Hi All,

Can anyone recommend any good references that discuss the design of modern
hang gliders (books, magazine articles, web sites etc). I am an aero
engineer and just curious to understand more about the finer points of their
design.

Please only reply if you have useful info. I don't need a barage of warnings
of the dire consequences of trying to design your own glider ... I just want
to learn more about how they work - not design one.

Thanks,

Steve

Hello Steve. First, in a public chat forum such as Usenet, anyone is allowed to
say anything they like. Got it? Thanks.

I'd venture to say that there are no articles which describe the workings of
modern hang-glider wings for three reasons: one, the manufacturers of such wings
are few-and-far-between, in a highly competitive and barely-profitable niche
market. Thus, the art of "roll-your-own" has gradually became taboo over the
years from that aspect alone. Two, nobody wants the guilt of knowing they might
kill someone who misuses the information (read, "causality.") And three, the
damage to the perceived sport caused by any accidents is far too great to risk.
Our numbers are already dwindling as it is. This is not intended to give you any
"barage of warnings" of course, but they are intrinsically relevant.

That said, perhaps try contacting a glider manufacturer directly. If you can
convince someone there that you're just curious, they might give up some
information. Try www.willswing.com or http://www.justfly.com/ or
http://www.hangglide.com/ to start. Also check out Red's webpage:
http://www.xmission.com/~red/

Regards,
Mark

Steve,
You might try the Marske gang for flying wing stuff. It's a place to
start. There are also many (old) books on theory and design for hang
gliders. Google search turns up many. Good luck and enjoy.

There is a section on Hang Glider design in Dennis Pagen's book
Performance Flying.

Available from most HG style book stores, abebooks or Google for it.

Hehe, I actually taped several hours of Gerolf Heinrichs lectures in
aerodynamics and design at Vaagaa Open (Norway) last month. Haven't gone
through all of the footage yet, but if you're interested - put up a notice
here: http://hedemarken.org/oppslagstavla/ (as I don't want to expose my
e-mail addy here, and only occasionally read this NG).
