"Bankrupt US Airways is giving flight attendants, machinists and passenger
service workers three weeks to reach consensual cost-cutting pacts before
the airline asks a judge to reject the unions' collective bargaining
agreements.

The nation's seventh-largest carrier made that disclosure in documents filed
with U.S. Bankruptcy Court late Thursday, saying that it would file a
so-called 1113(c) motion by mid-November and at the same time ask the court
to approve reductions in medical benefits for 10,800 US Airways retirees."

medicine" as the Americans like to put it. I have friends who live in
the US who need insulin but cannot afford to buy it because no doctor
will see them and approve a prescription. Insulin is cheap to buy,
doctor time very expensive.

What a blow to be a pensioner and have your medical benefits reduced.

The way that United States company law works, I think that there is
every chance that they will still go bust completely. Oddly the
pensioners probably have more protection in those circumstance (or then
again not, depending on which state the company is registered in).

I recall when BA withdrew it investment and support in US Air, there was
much speculation about whether they could continue. As none of the US
airline business seems to have a good long term future, this must be of
some concern to us.
