I was wondering if there was a software package that would allow me to
download the "crumb trail" maps from my handheld GPS. I'm using a Garmin
GPS 12, (a hell of a buy at $100). It has "data in" and "data out" pins. I
know you can hook it up to a laptop computer for certain applications. All
I was interested in was downloading the crumb trail maps after a flight.
Any info appreciated. Thanks, Robert |

I use TOPO USA 4.0 to do just that with my Garmin 12.

I use QuakeMap GPS. It allows you to download the track and you can
color code the display according to either elevation or groundspeed on
either satellite or topographic maps off of the internet. You can
download their demo program at http://www.earthquakemap.com/ . It will
continue to work after the demo period expires except that there will
be random map tiles that won't download. I liked it so much I sprung
for the 10 buck license. One feature I've never used is that you can
associate pictures with the tracks as well if you want to keep a visual
log.

Robert,
DeLorme products such as Street Atlas will allow you to upload
waypoints and routes and download waypoints and trails. There is a
Garmin - Garmin interface selection on the G-12 and Street Atlas that
are very compatible.
I have used Street Atlas with Garmin's G-45, G-48, G-III, G-V, G-12 Map
with good success. I was never tried it with UL's but have downloaded
tracks I recorded while flying commercial (on those carriers that have
a sense of humor when it comes to GPS's)

download a free trial version of seeyou at
http://www.seeyou.ws/
automatically downloads DEM data for your flight as well as animates your
flight on your computer screen in 3d. way cool. that is of course if your
gps records altitude in the tracklog.
otherwise it lays the flight over over a surface map.
i dont think the 12 records altitude .

My Garmin 12 Map does report altitude . . . but it does not record
altitude for waypoints. I don't know if individual track points
include altitude data . . . but my guess is no.
Anyone know the definitive answer?

The Garmin 12 does not record altitude along with the track points.
