Hi,

I was wondering where someone purchases software like this from, and
what's the best software out there for this? I now have a laptop and after
I finish my PPL, it would be nice to make use of it, just in case the plane
I'm renting does not have a GPS unit already installed. Any and all inputs
are very much appreciated.

Thanks

What about www.pocketfms.com including GPS and free unless you upgrade
to more detailed maps. Excellent flight planing too!

Using a laptop in the airplane is generally very awkward. Where do you put
it? There is no room in your lap. The seat next to you may be occupied and
if it isn't you still have to be constantly turning your head and futzing
around over there. Mounting it on the glareshield obstructs your vision.

Better to just get a handheld GPS.

He probably HAS a handheld GPS.

You don't necessarily mount the laptop in the aircraft. You use it at home.
It is much easier and error-free to program your route and waypoints and
upload them into the GPS from the PC, rather than using the GPS keypad,
ESPECIALLY on handhelds.

I am not so familiar with the conversion of aviation charts into the
appropriate form, but a program like
www.oziexplorer.com
works really great with marine charts.

Hmmm. Get a yoke mount.
I have one for my 52" TV and I love it.
Of course, I haven't actually flown anywhere since I got it, but look at
how much I'm saving on Avgas :)

Failing that, there are some great, relatively low priced handhelds out
there :)
