Flew down to Goolwa on Saturday Arvo to see how things were shaping up.
Groundspeed on the way down was barely 60 knots. Gave my inbound call at
five miles, estimating the circuit area by about Wednesday. Considerable
activity, several larger machines already there (including "Hawdon" the
ex-TAA DC-3) and hassled people running around with big mallets banging
in extra pegs to hold down various tents, kids bouncing castles, etc.
Flew back via Noarlunga to drop Ivor and Mary off so they could bring
their Stearman over. On final, as speed dropped back to 40knots, Mary
(in back) started squealing and Ivor leaned across and began tapping the
ASI to see if it was stuck. They aren't used to Austers.....
Weather today much better. Light breeze and overcast with high base.
Plenty of traffic in circuit when I dropped in, about number 5 to
several others beetling around the circuit. Heard a Bandieranti give an
estimate similar to mine- thought this might be interesting as his
landing speed is 2 knots faster than my cruise. And so it turned out, me
on short finals and him rapidly closing the gap from behind. Warned him
I was landing short, stayed at 60kts until almost on the fence, then
chopped the power and dumped all the flap as the speed washed off. Fell
into the ground well before the threshold, and pulled up just past the
first taxiway. Spun around and faced a windshield full of blazing
headlights. Managed to scuttle off just quickly enough so he didn't have
to go round..... Don't you just love the mixture of aircraft you get at
big airshows? Just as well I had the brakes fixed....
Usual airshow stuff ensued. Interesting moment when the "Viper" open-top
hot-rod that was supposed to be racing Chris Sperou floored it, lost
traction on one rear wheel and went sideways off the runway in a huge
cloud of dust. Emerged moments later with driver and passenger coughing
and sneezing and spitting out dirt, looking decidedly unpolished. Got an
enthusiastic round of applause....
One jet flew- can't remember what it was called, but it started its run
right back at the fence and seemed to fly in ground effect until well
past Goolwa township before beginning to really climb. Must have given
the local residents a bit if a thrill.
More Jabirus present than flies at a barbecue. Huge crowds- Adelaide has
been a bit starved for airshows of late. Two shapely young ladies
arrived in a Super-pup and parked next to me. Stealth is right- aviation
isn't dead, its just de-centralised, and the youngsters are still
getting into it. The ones with moderately well-off parents, anyway.
Caught up with a heap of friends that I hadn't seen for some time (20
years in one case) and noted they all have more grey hairs and less of
it than me. Toddled off home before the Jabiru rush got started and
peered pityingly down at all the plebs in the cars caught in the
traffic.....

Have you noticed every airshow in sth oz no matter what time of year it
is held, is grey and over cast. ie jamestown 2003, 2004, rowland flat
and goolwa i think its funny how that always happens :)

I'll have pity on you mate ! I only moved here 3 years ago after
stumbling upon it !
Goolwa is arguably the best keept secret for ex wage slaves to migrate
too. Historic River Port at the end of the mighty Murray before it
tries to empty into Encounter Bay (Southern Ocean).
First town to start a railway in Australia.
Great place to be if you like the simple things in life ; fishing;
drinking good Reds; eating out; surfing; boating and yes, a nice little
airport to operate from.
Pssssst ... keep it a secret will yer ?

Que?
Why would a Pie Chaser or a Colt (eg) with 2 females in it be called a Super

You haven't been dope-sniffing again, have you?

What's the aviation event at Goolwa, dates / times / activities, likely sort
of aircraft? I see at least my favourite (a DC-3).
I am there in my 9 m Tennessee wooden river launch this weekend for Goolwa
Wooden Boat Festival, which starts with an 18.00 trailer parade on Fri.11.3,
then has the main activites (sailpasts and novelty events) on Saturday and
Sunday. Several paddlesteamers will be present, with at least one offering
public rides. www.woodenboatfestival.com.au.
And to complete the multimodal weekend, SteamRanger will be running trains
between Goolwa and Victor Harbor.
