I went to Google Canada some months ago when that godawful Beta version of
Google Groups was introduced in the US. Today it found it's way to the
Canadian site as well. Anybody know of a clean site left?

Try these:
http://groups.google.co.in/advanced_group_search?hl=en

I'm stuck using Google to access the groups when I'm at work. I've found
their version of the groups to be not without merit. It's not as good as
using Outlook Express (or Outlook) -- but it's better than some newsreaders
I've found.
What do you find so wrong with it?

One of the groups that I follow, Beta just abitrarily dropped about
13,000 posts and decided that there were only 2 posts in 10+ years of
the group's exsistance. Three days later it suddenly found the posts it
dropped and then the next day lost them again....

Although, I'm sure this is not the reason for Mr. McNicoll's
abhorrence of Google Group's Beta user interface, Google Groups is an
open spam gateway to Usenet evidenced by the recent blizzard of spam
posted by 'Amos'.
The 'improved' Beta UI automatically trims included text from the
articles it presents, rewraps formatted text poorly, destroys proper
threading, and is generally inferior to the prior Google interface,
let alone the useful DajaNews interface.

Tell your boss to get a clue. As long as you're reading the newsgroups on
your own time, there's no reason you shouldn't have NNTP access on your work
network.

I find it more difficult to track message threads compared to the previous
format. I think it's a step backward.

(still searching more newsfeeds for our newsserver (we have now 20+ feeds
up and running) - see http://service.hotze.com/usenet/peering.htm for more
info; I might also add alt.binaries.pictures.aviation some day, depending
on traffic. and there might be a chance for access to the server for r.a.*

"ISP at work"? You've never worked at a company with a real IT
department, have you? Ours doesn't allow anything out of the firewall
without passing through proxies that they can monitor, and that means web
telnet, or ftp only. Not even ssh, which is a royal pain in the ass.

I have the doubtful pleasure to host a site for someone (google translates
it with 'work council') who needs to access the site from within the
company he is working for (Swarovski crystal [1]).

you can change the port ssh is using (but you might then violate our
company's usage policy)

Doesn't help if the only connection I'm allowed to make is to port 8080 on
proxy-server.<company>.com
Yes, I know how you can tunnel ssh through a web proxy. I don't
particularly want to get fired, though. We have a telnet proxy, and so I
telnet home and use text based news and mail clients there. Which is one
reason why I LOVE mutt and trn and have never been tempted to the dark
side of GUI newsreaders. The other reason is that I can navigate my news
without taking my hands off the home row and grabbing a mouse.
