Glasgow, like instant coffee, is just not getting the credit it deserves

THE injustice Glaswegians have suffered loudly for years was confirmed
yesterday - their city is one of the most underrated things on the planet.
Along with Twiglets, instant coffee, and the duck-billed platypus, a panel
of style connoisseurs has agreed Scotland's biggest conurbation does not
receive the hype it deserves.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh and Trainspotting, the film, were condemned as
overrated, along with other coveted treats like lattes and strawberries.
The
lists of the 100 most over and underrated phenomena were compiled by a
team
at Esquire, the men's magazine.

Covering a range of subjects from food to sport to the arts, the finished
guide comments on modern life, labelling therapy and Prozac as over-egged
and the benefits of pulling yourself together and sitting down to a
comforting bowl of chicken soup as overlooked.

Keith Laidlaw of Esquire said the magazine expected its findings to spark
heated debate among readers. He said: "It was the editor's idea and
started
with everyone in the office coming up with things. Then everyone was in
the
pub coming up with things."

Mr Laidlaw, who was brought up near Edinburgh, is only too aware that
comparing the Scottish capital unfavourably with Glasgow will prick
nerves.
However, he admitted he nominated the cities for the opposing categories
because so many Londoners wax lyrical about Edinburgh's charms with only a
cursory glance to its rival.

Mr Laidlaw: "Being from Edinburgh, everyone I speak to says what a lovely
city it is whereas in actual fact Glasgow is a lot more fun and a much
better night out. "The public at large, especially down here in London, do
not really know what Glasgow has to offer. They associate it with razor
gangs and think it is a dangerous place to go."

With controversial inclusions on the overrated side like Jack Nicholson,
Star Wars, Bart Simpson, the Tate Modern, Pringles, and goat's cheese, Mr
Laidlaw said Esquire did not feel the overpuffed were "bad", just unworthy
of the attention they received. He said: "It doesn't necessarily mean
Edinburgh
is a bad place, but perhaps the press it gets is excessive for how good it
is.

"With something like goat's cheese, it is everywhere, you cannot escape
it,
and it is not quite that nice."
Moira Dyer, spokeswoman for Greater Glasgow and Clyde Valley Tourist
Board,
lapped up the endorsement from Esquire, which is publishing the lists in
its
June edition.

She said: "This is just another example of Glasgow's growing reputation as
a
fabulous international city. It comes along with other comments such as
Glasgow being Scotland's capital of cool, which appeared in Elle Decor,
the
US magazine, last month.
"As long as people are debating or are interested in Glasgow it is just
going to further enhance what we have."

Meanwhile, Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board took the news the city was
considered overhyped in its stride.
One PR executive, with her tongue firmly in cheek, said: "If Edinburgh is
overrated, does that mean I am out of a job?"

Jon, I would try and put Glasgow in a stronger bracket than Essex and
Brown Sauce if you want to push this issue!
