GLASGOW PRESTWICK…UNPLUGGED!

GPIA Press Release

Glasgow Prestwick has installed wireless broadband internet "hot spots"
throughout the airport.

This means departing or arriving passengers can now go online anywhere
in the terminal building if their laptops or PDAs are wi-fi enabled.

The new wireless technology will be a big benefit for passengers at
Scotland's fastest-growing airport, says Prestwick Commercial
Coordinator John Emley.

He explained: "Wi-Fi is short for "wireless fidelity" which is fast
gaining acceptance as an alternative to wired technology. It simply
means you don't have to plug into a phone socket to get online; you just
access the internet hot spots wherever you are in the airport without
any wires or cables.

"So you can surf the net, unplugged!

"We're confident it will be a big hit with both leisure and business
travellers," he said. "For example, while awaiting a flight - in the
departure lounge, the restaurant or the bar - you can quickly get online
to check emails or download data. For busy people on the move, it's
fast, convenient and the best use of time."

He added: "It's a growth area so we're happy to provide it for our
passengers, as befits a modern, twenty-first century airport handling
2.5m passengers this year, many of whom are business travellers."

John explained that the laptop or PDA has to have the proper wireless
software to log onto the network which is provided by BT Openzone, one
of the biggest providers of this technology. You also need pre-paid
cards, available in the airport, or you can buy time online at
btopenzone.com.

Crosspost trolling!

Anyone answering these crosspost are destroying the agenda of both newsgroups.

Extract from our posting guidelines...

-------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: What is not acceptable

Cross-posting articles between alt.airports.uk.edinburgh and
alt.airports.uk.glasgow. (Cross-posting to binary newsgroups is also not
acceptable for obvious reasons).

Both newsgroups should be allowed their own unique identities without
'stealing' each others.

"The Crosspost Troll"

This is perhaps the most effective Troll in that it produces large
numbers of posts with little effort from the Troll. An inflammatory post
is made to a group of Sub Target newsgroups, say cooking, politics or
guns. The Target Newsgroup is included in the ng list. The innocent
posters to the Sub Target newsgroup continue to discuss this in the
normal way without noticing that the posts are also going to the Target
Newsgroup.

Not having a wi-fi laptop, do public places like this normally charge for
internet connection ? If so does anyone know what rates ?

Hmmmm £6 per hour. Thanks Jim. I have just installed wi-fi at home and
the kids are using their laptops to browse the net without bothering me.
Wonder if I could get away with charging the £3 an hour and saving up enough
to buy ME a laptop as well.

Any good on Netgear Bill? I have just given up wireless at home in
favour of a powerline solution, as I was so fed up with lost
connections. I have come to the conclusion that my house was not
suitable. Too much sunspot activity perhaps .......

I had similar problems but relocation of DECT telephones and a (legal)
video sender along with change of transmission channels solved the
problems.

The powerline solution is severly limited speedwise at present is it
not?

I had a Netgear, but got so frustrated with the constantly dropping
signals that I sold it to my next door neighbour.... The Linksys are
especially good value at Maplins at the moment. The range of
downloadable firmware out there is excellent, and highly configurable.
In fact, if you have trouble delivering a good signal at home, you
should buy two and set one up as a repeater.

You sold your Wifi router to the next door neighbour?
I bet there was nothing wrong with it and now you have free internet
access through your neighbours account!!

I've got a Belkin device.
I bought it because I had a day at home and could get it down the road
at Comet that day. I was up and running in minutes.
Comes with four cat5 ports. Main PC is wired and the laptop connects
wirelessly. (As will the PSP Xmas presents)
Sometimes I lose the internet on the laptop. However usually I can
still connect wirelessly to the router and do a hard reset through
Internet Explorer. The odd time I just have to reset my laptop.
One bug bear is the cat5 connections. The cable can easily slip out the
back of the extra ports. I've tried all the ports and different cables.
They just don't click in right. However hasn't slipped out for weeks
now. Any one else found this with Belkin devices?

Mike

BT Openzone is just one of many wi-fi providers, I use them from time
to time but there are cheaper providers too. They also do a £10 charge
for a full 24 hour period, and other more attractive tariffs for
regular users I believe ?

All in all it's a bit of luxury still, getting online on your own
lap-top, so I guess the more it catches on (and it will) the cheaper it
becomes?
