The figures confirm Glasgow's Prestwick's position as Scotland's
fastest-growing airport and also one of the fastest-growing in Western
Europe.

03 Q What is the free.uk.* hierarchy for ?
free.uk.* is another way of writing free.uk.(anything)
This stands for all the newsgroups which begin with the
words free.uk. ( note the dots )
These groups are for discussing anything and everything,
but normally having some relevance to, or amongst
people from, the UK ( United Kingdom of Great Britain
and Northern Ireland ).
Free.uk is for ordinary people, not just internet experts,
with the topics reflecting the day to day experiences,
aspirations and hobbies of the much larger community
of people who now have internet access at home.
You want a group - lets create it.
--------------------------------------------------------------
05 Q Why aren't these groups in the uk.* hierarchy
instead ?
A For any number of reasons such as the following:-
1) because the uk usenet committee wouldn't allow the
group to be proposed there.
2) because a bunch of people voted the proposal down.
3) because someone preferred to create the group in
free.uk.* instead.
4) because the free.uk groups are generally friendly and easy going.
------------------------------------------------------------
07 Q How is free.* different to alt.* and other
hierarchies?
A Free.* groups don't need to have charters, cannot be
removed, renamed or have censorship imposed upon
them. Anyone can create a free group without being
subjected to a barrage of questions and a flawed
voting procedure.
The free.* hierarchy was originally set up just to stop a
few people from complaining but has subsequently
turned out to be more useful than expected.
For one version of the story of the origins of free.*
see http://www.uiuc.edu/ph/www/tskirvin/faqs/free.html
---------------------------------------------------------------
09 Q How many groups are there meant to be in
free.uk.*?
A. As many groups as you want. You can look up a list of all the
groups
that have ever been created in the entire free.* hierarchy from here
ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/control/free
Below is a selection from the free.uk.* groups, including most of
those recently created:
free.uk.binaries.edinburgh-airport

free.uk.talk.southampton
free.uk.talk.stevenage
------------------------------------------------------------
11 Q How can I get access to the free.uk.* groups ?
A Ok, prepare for a little bit of work, there's no easy way to
explain this.
If you already know how to access other newsgroups
jump to 11b.
11a
Newsgroups are not the same as the World Wide Web
or email. They are transmitted through a different
protocol and accessed with different parts of your
software. Having said that, most Netscape or Internet
Explorer users can just click on an url such as
news:free.news.admin.newusers and the news reader
software might be loaded for you.
Look under the news menu in Netscape Navigator or
Outlook Express.
Otherwise, you could download Free Agent, an
excellent free newsreader from http://www.forte.inc
and use that.
More detailed information about configuring your
software to read newsgroups will be available on the
freeUKusenet website at
http://www.bigwig.net/free.uk.usenet
11b
First, update the list of groups available in your
newsreader and check under "f" for free.uk , scrolling
down. You may already have them and all you need to do
is subscribe to those you like.
If your ISP doesn't have the free.uk newsgroups on
their server you should ask for them to be added.
Either ask for the specific ones you are interested in or
for the whole list. Try emailing news@YOUR-
ISP or admin@YOUR-ISP with your request or posting it
to any local ISP.support newsgroups , or phoning
technical support ( Beware! Some of these support lines
charge at premium rates )
If you get nowhere move to another ISP that you know
already has the groups or will add groups upon
request.
Deja(news) has recently added a facility to subscribe to newsgroups
via email, you can post via email too. To do this, go to
http://www.deja.com
set up a user name and password for "mydeja" find the groups you
want to
subscribe to and set the "deliver via email" or "deliver digest via
email"
box.
There are lists of some free ( ie you don't have to pay a
monthly fee) ISP's in the UK at:
http://www.12free.co.uk/
http://www.net4nowt.com
http://members.tripod.com/paulspages/isp/free_isp.htm
-------------------------------------------------------------------
13 Q Can I have a new group in free.uk.* ?
A Yes. Anybody who knows how to edit the appropriate
headers in their newsreader can try for a free.* group.
Just post a message that looks
something like this (headers and all):
- - - - - -
Newsgroups: free.control,free.uk.fishing
Subject: cmsg newgroup free.uk.fishing
Approved: gills (AT) goldfish (DOT) co.uk
Control: newgroup free.uk.fishing
From: gills (AT) goldfish (DOT) co.uk
For your newsgroups file:
free.uk.fishing Commercial and sport fishing in the UK
- - - - - - -
There's no guarantee that many servers will carry your
group, of course, but at least some will. Better
names will probably ensure that more servers will
carry your group, so you might want to put some
thought into it. Once you have sent the control message
you will need to publicise the new group and get all your
friends with different ISPs to request it.
Or you can email your suggestion to usenet-uk (AT) bigfoot (DOT) com
and someone will help or do it for you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14 Q What is the relationship between free.uk and the rest of usenet
?
A Free.uk is technically a sub-hierarchy of free.* , so it
should be protected by the anti control-freak rules of the
umbrella system.
Hopefully , free.uk is seen as an additional choice rather
than competition for the older established hierarchies.
There is no reason why the academics and professionals
should not continue unaffected with their convoluted rules
and conventions which are so offputting to the newer
people.
The free.* groups , and free.uk in particular are
independent and freewheeling, and will never be beholden
to any cliques, special interest groups, commercial or
political influences. This enables the collective power of
consumers to stand free of the telecomms and Internet
Provider industries who seem unwilling to let go and allow
the rest of usenet to float on its own.
In practice, many people move freely between free.uk and other
hierarchies, simply excercising one more choice.
------------------------------------------------------------------
15 Q Who started all this ?
A Various individuals who got fed up with being
messed about by the uk usenet committee and control.
The system for creating groups in uk.* seems to invite
conflict at every stage. There are constant rows arising
out of decisions by the uk usenet committee and control
which are claimed to be arbitrary and unfair.
This can be very frustrating to anybody coming along
with a perfectly sensible request for a new group, only
to find they are ambushed with impossible questions,
instructions to create a completely different group
instead, or attempts at humiliation and often abuse.
So a few of us got together in a loose alliance called
the Reform Group to work towards cleaning the place
up a bit. The existence of the free.uk* groups serves to
take the heat out of those discussions, providing an
alternative hierarchy for groups refused a place in the
uk* hierarchy. This may also increase the pressure on
the uk* administrators to enable the creation of groups
instead of all too frequently opposing them.
It may also encourage a more open and accountable
regime in uk*, and unite the previously isolated
dissidents and critics of uk* into a cohesive force for
reform.
------------------------------------------------------------------
17 Q What does The Reform Group stand for ?
A Freedom and sense! More specifically:
Re: free.uk.*
---------
To keep this hierarchy free and uncensored, to
promote its growth and good propagation.
Re: uk.*
----
To try and bring about sensible reforms which will
transform the uk.* hierarchy and committee into bodies
which work smoothly for the users instead of against them.
such as:
* make the group creation process easier.
* Abolish the veto.
* reduce the role of control to simply issuing the
necessary pgp signed system commands on the
instruction of the committee.
* Annual elections for all committee members, with the
right of recall if the electors are not happy with them.
* No reserved places, dump the permanent members.
* No more secret discussions: publish the full committee minutes
Re: usenet in general
-------------------------
To oppose cliques, cabals and monopolies who try to
maintain control over this valuable resource for mass
communication.
To promote the wider use of usenet by ordinary people
by opposing the kind of behaviour which excludes the
newly connected such as snobbery, gratuitous abuse,
discrimination on the basis of chosen ISP or whatever.
--------------------------------------------------------
19 Good. How can I contact the Reform Group ?
Email usenet-uk (AT) bigfoot (DOT) com if you would like to
initiate a discussion, or contact one of the people you
see posting to newsgroups promoting the free.uk FAQ
in their .sig or campaigning for Reform Group
candidates in elections.

Charters aside, none of the above applies to the creation of alt.*

You must remember bitching about alt.airports.uk.glasgow being a

and conventions which are so offputting to the newer
* Abolish the veto.
