Experts back link to capital airport

GLASGOW must be linked by rail to Edinburgh Airport, top economists said
today.

Experts at one of Scotland's most respected think-tanks said the west
coast economy would
suffer if politicians gave in to concerns over the cost of building a
new rail terminal at the capital's
airport.

Under the plans, which could cost more than £500million, trains between
Glasgow and the capital
will stop at Edinburgh Airport.

The proposal sparked fury in the west when it was first unveiled in 2003
by then transport minister
Iain Gray.

Mr Gray was proposing to spend up to three times as much on Edinburgh as
Glasgow, but always
maintained Glasgow would also benefit greatly.

Now The Scottish Council for Development and Industry has backed his
view, saying: "Crucially,
the preferred option will use existing train services."

"Cut-price options would seriously disadvantage passengers and
businesses in the west of
Scotland, remove fewer cars from our roads and pile yet more pressure on
Waverley."

Seems very strange to me, especially as they apparently need people
form Glasgow and the west of the central belt to support to link. Why
not spend equal amounts of money ensuring both cities get a top quality
rail service and then link the two? I obviously don't know the in and
outs but from a spectators point of view there seems a very simple
solution.

I can't remember similar claims re: the M74 extension and Dualling of the A1?

Double standards?
