|
|
Unfortunately it looks like some of my predictions are being
fulfilled....
Personally I think the new EDI - EWR is the beginning of the end of
scheduled transatlantic from GLA, and the beginning of BAA preparing
EDI for the future and sell off of GLA.
Got to be good news for EDI betweem this and Jetmagic. Yet again GLA
appears to be coming out of this empty handed.
In fact between Emirates now appearing to not happen until 2005, if at
all,ZOOM considering MAN rather than GLA as was originally planned, as
I dont doubt the Manchester can come up with a better deal, and no new
direct non-stop year round services announced you have to wonder where
GLA goes from here?
In case anyone missed the EDI and ZOOM announcements.
DETAILS of a major new international air service from Edinburgh
airport will be unveiled later today - an announcement which is
expected to see the capital finally gain direct scheduled flights to
New York.
First Minister Jack McConnell is due to attend the launch of the new
route, which Edinburgh airport's owner, BAA, has claimed will
"potentially promote significant economic benefits for Scotland".
Although all parties involved refused to reveal the destination or
airline involved in the new service, it is understood that Continental
Airlines - which already operates a daily service to New York from
Glasgow - is behind the move.
The news has been planned to coincide with this week's Routes
conference in Edinburgh, which will bring representatives of all the
world's major airlines together to discuss the development of new
services to Scotland.
But separately, ex-pat entrepreneur Hugh Boyle has warned that
Scotland could be set to lose out to Manchester on a clutch of direct
services to Canada he had planned to launch from Glasgow next year.
Continental has long-promised a transatlantic service for Edinburgh.
The launch of direct flights to New York had originally been pencilled
in for the latter half of 2001, but was postponed in the wake of the
11 September terrorist attacks.
Mike Carter, head of the Houston-based carrier's UK operations, told
The Scotsman last year that the proposed Edinburgh to New York flights
would not hit the runway until 2004. Any flights announced today are
unlikely to take off before the end of 2003 at the very earliest,
giving the company time to sell seats.
John Corcoran, managing director of Boston-based financial giant State
Street's operations in Edinburgh, said: "It's welcome news. Obviously
we would be more interested in a service to Boston, but a direct
service from Edinburgh to the States is good news. And New York makes
sense because there is such a strong financial community there."
Industry sources have previously suggested that the daily Glasgow to
New York service, its most successful UK route outside London, could
be in jeopardy if the Edinburgh service takes off.
Boyle, meanwhile, has said that Glasgow could lose out on services to
five Canadian cities his airline Zoom had planned to launch from
Glasgow. The entrepreneur, who founded Direct Holidays with his
brother John, the Motherwell FC chairman, is now considering an
alternative proposal from Manchester airport for the planned flights
to Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax and Ottawa.
Boyle said: "I am Scottish, I am proud to be Scottish, and I already
have heavy business interests in Scotland. I would still prefer to
launch this service from Glasgow, however, I will have to wait for the
final proposals from Manchester, which has a bigger population base,
before deciding on the departure point for these services."
He denied the suggestion that he was appealing for government
subsidies, but said: "Obviously any company would be grateful of any
incentives on offer."
•A NEW air service is to take off from Inverness next month, directly
linking the Highland capital with Birmingham for the first time.
Nicol Stephen, the transport minister, announced that Eastern Airways
will operate the twice-daily service from 26 October.
Eastern, which introduced an Inverness-Manchester link last November,
will run the Birmingham flights Monday to Friday with 18-seat
Jetstream 32 aircraft. Fares will be £180 return.
•IRISH airline Jetmagic is set to launch twice daily services from
Edinburgh to Cork, which will take to the skies next Monday.

Hi David.
Try to be more optomistic. The GLA route is safe as confirmed today
and operates as their most successful UK route outwith London. GLA can
sustain the New York route in it's own right and now has a chance to
prove it.
It has nothing to do with BAA abandoning GLA. They are fulfilling
their duty to try to secure all and any new routes from it's Scottish
airports and at least we can now finally discount the
catgorisation/favouritism theories preffered by some.

Rumours of GLA's death have been exaggerated. Anyway, GLA has been
categorised for charter flights and HIAL connections.

Realistic is perhaps a better way of putting it. I still maintain that
BAA will be forced to relinquish one or other of GLA or EDI. If I was
them I would keep EDI, however they cant just move the transatlantic
over to EDI wthout their being the most god awfull uproar so do it
slowly and discreetly and then one day like PIK we will waken up with
none of the scheds and only the charters.
In the meantime open a new store here and there, a new parking lot,
and whatever will give you biggest bang for the buck at the least
expense at GLA and tell the press you are still investing in it.
In fact for good measurer release some verbal diahorea about all the
airlines queuing up to get in but never deliver and that will keep the
press of there backs for a bit longer.
But if you still dont believe me lets have a sweep as to whether COA
will still op out of Glasgow beyond 2004. My monies on 2005 being the
last year.
No one took me up on my offer the last time. Perhaps this time?
David
PS: As to BAA announcing a new route from GLA as a sop, my money is
GLA to the faroes one day a week. Friday in Monday out with the
aircraft operating IT over the weekend :-)

It's not in BAA's power to move anything anywhere. The airlines decide where
to fly - not BAA. Just like when the unfair PIK t/x monopoly was outlawed.
The airlines then had the choice and they chose GLA. EDI wasn't even
considered back then but it's a bit different now. But you seem to be
suggesting BAA should not have allowed them to set up at EDI. That would be
catagorisation and illegal.

COA could only qualify for the discounts and incentives if they commited to |
maintaining the GLA route. It is one of the conditions that any qualifying
service will not be at the expense of an existing route. And rightly so.
The GLA route does not depend on EDI punters contrary to the claims of some.
GLA can sustain the flights in it's own right and most of the EDI pax will
be those who previously took connections on other airlines. Your suggestion
seems to imply that GLA could not make a success of the route without the
support of Edinburgers but Continental, BAA, The Scottish Executive, Jack
McConnell and me are sure both routes can succeed. If not we are all kidding
ourselves on that Scotland suffers from a lack of overseas routes.

Would be nice to think you were right Clive.
Unfortunately all the evidence points to the contrary.
Mcconnell and his cronies have been pining for this for years. Why EDI
should have tx flights all of a sudden now, when the city has never
before been served tx flights beats me.
Lets face it the politicians in Edinburgh don't give a toss about GLA,
talk is cheap, and we keep falling for it. By the time the M74
extension is in place EDI will have firmly established itself with
those living in the east of Glasgow. EDI willby then have been
declared as the hub airport. Don't think so ? Well why is the Exec
spending over half a billion on the rail link, and I'm sure the cost
will spiral over over 1 billion, (it always does with tunnels).
Ah ha, the politicians say, there will be private sector funding as
well for this link. As an investor would you invest in a mega
expensive rail link to EDI if you thought GLA was going to be the hub
airport ? Reply yes and please report to Gartnavel immediately.
GLA is finished, I'd bet the ranch on it, and I'm not known for making
stupid bets. As the Scotsman reports today we are downgraded to a
pi*sy little 757 next year for EWR, all thanks to the socialist public
subsidies EDI is receiving. How long 'till AMR and Icelandair move ?
Well, many thanks to the cretins who voted for the white elephant
parliament the priorities of which are now 1, smacking children, 2,
which songs can or cannot be sung at the football, and now 3, EDI
airport.
If we didn't have the stupid waste of monet parliament and BBA weren't
stupid enough to sell off PIK, GLA would still be servicing 50% more
pax than EDI.
I'm sick, but not surprised. Politicians, don't they really piss you
off ?

Why should anyone pay for anyone else? Re-distribution of wealth
is one of the reasons for taxation. When it comes to international

As to the lack of overseas routes it would have been better if this
had been one that was not currently serviced. At the end of the day
that would have been the best option for Scotland.
