GLASGOW Airport was bracing itself today for one of its busiest weekends of
the year.
It expects to handle 14,000-15,000 extra charter passengers today and
tomorrow at the start of the October school holiday.
Managing director Stephen Baxter expects 52 extra charter flights today and
another 63 tomorrow.
Around 22,000 people pass through the airport on a normal day.
Mr Baxter said: "We're putting in place some of the same plans as when
Celtic were in Seville. We expect this to be one of the busiest weekends of
the year."
Thomas Cook Airlines said it would lay on an extra 28 Boeing 757s today and
tomorrow to carry 7000 people to the sun.
A spokesman said: "All staff leave has been cancelled and extra staff have
been drafted into Glasgow from other Scots bases.
"This will be supported by a fully crewed emergency stand-by Boeing, should
anything go wrong, to ensure everyone gets to their destination on time."
Travel agents said they had been overwhelmed with the demand for holidays to
Spain and other sunspots, as well as city breaks.
Airport bosses urged people to leave for flights in plenty of time as roads
will be busy.
lEDINBURGH Airport is still growing more than twice as fast as Glasgow, new
figures have confirmed.
The capital's airport handled 687,000 passengers in September, 10% more than
in the same month a year before. September figures were up 3.6% in Glasgow
to 815,000. By the end of September it had 8.08 million passengers, 5.6%
more than a year before.
