GLASGOW Airport has secured another major transatlantic route.
US Airways has announced it will start summer-only daily flights to
Philadelphia starting next year.
The move comes nearly a year after the Evening Times first revealed route
talks with US Airways.
But the new flights have failed to win any support from the Scottish
Executive, which has subsidised 13 new routes from other Scottish airports
this year.
US Airways said it would launch the flights from May through to October,
assuming it received permission from US and British transport officials.
The airline will be able to offer 45 connections across the US, the
Caribbean and Canada from Pennsylvania Airport, its major hub on the eastern
seaboard.
Philadelphia has a population of nearly six million, making it the US's
fifth biggest city and the second biggest on the eastern seaboard.
US Airways will compete with Continental, which flies to New York daily from
Glasgow, and American Airlines, which offers daily flights to Chicago in the
summer.
The new route will get backing for marketing from VisitScotland and the
Greater Glasgow and Clyde Valley Tourist Board and will get a discount on
landing charges from the airport's owner, BAA Scottish Airports.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Executive said: "This is a very positive
announcement."
But added: "Investment from the route development fund has not been offered
because the route, which is not year-round, does not meet the criteria."
US Airways will operate a Boeing 767 with 199 seats.

Not trying to put a downer on things but there is no slot approval in the
system yet for Glasgow.. That of course doesn't mean to say it wont be
approved just not filled yet.
LH slots are still there Blimpie but I don't know if they are operating from
GLA this winter.

Hopefully they do but I'd bet on next summers schedules, but you never know,
