Can any of you locals advise me:-
I need to travel from Glasgow Airport to Aberdeen Airport one day next week
for a 09:30 meeting (for an hour or so)and be back in Glasgow Airport for
2pm.
Looks like I can't fly so how long do you think the drive might take and is
Kincardine or Forth Road Bridge the best way?
Autoroute says 160 miles & 3 hours. I normally do Glasgow-Newcastle which is
the same distance in less than 2hrs 30.

Thanks
Martin.

I live near Dundee, and when I drive to and from Glasgow I normally don't go
via either of those routes . I generally drive via Perth and Stirling on the
A9 etc - It is very good dual-carrigeway virtually all the way and tends to
keep you away from the bridges and the A8000 which can be a nightmare at any
time of day (particularly the A8000). In light traffic the route via
Perth/Stirling to Dundee generally takes about 1hour 30mins (from Glasgow
City centre) or about 1h40ish from the airport. You pass round Dundee on the
Kingsway (just follow the Aberdeen signs) - The traffic on this bit is
generally fine.

At the moment I'm driving up to Aberdeen about 2 or 3 times a week. From
Dundee it takes about 1h15mins, but beware cause there are LOTS of speed
cameras! The police have also had a lot of mobile cameras/unmarked cars out
recently, so watch it! There have also been terrible delays at the roadworks
just south of Aberdeen recently, but I understand they' re supposed to be
finished this weekend, although I'd definately check before leaving
(although there's probably not much you can do to avoid them!). Getting
through Aberdeen can be very time consuming as well, even outside the main
rush hours, so leave yourself plenty time.

Many thanks for that Iain.
In that case is it worth taking the A94 from Perth towards Forfar rather
than going via Dundee.
Thanks
Martin

Stick on the dual carriage way all the way it is much the quickest.
Cumbernauld Perth Dundee Aberdeen. Once north of Glasgow it is 2 hours
30min driving. Beware Anderson Drive when you get to Aberdeen because it
can be very slow and no way round it.

For 9.30 I would leave at 6 am

Martin,

Stay on the dual carrigeway all the way - I certainly wouldn't go anywhere
near the A94 - A very slow road with lots of tractors etc! I'm not really
sure why you've suggested this tbh - there should be no problem getting
through Dundee.

I would say Doug's timings are about right - the biggest delay you will face
is getting through Aberdeen itself - As Doug says, Anderson Drive can be
very congested.

Have a good trip!

Hi Martin

My company office is in Bridge of Don, Aberdeen.
I quite often drive up from Giffnock in the South Side of Glasgow.

To make it for 09:30 you will have to leave pretty early. Unfortunately
Aberdeen Airport is in the North Side of the city. If you leave it too
late you will get stuck in traffic at the bridge coming into Aberdeen
and all along Anderson Drive. Hopefully the road works are finished
between Stonehaven and Portlethen or you will be in for big delays.

I suggest you leave around 05:00 to 05:30, you will miss most of the
traffic but might get slowed down a little in Aberdeen. You should be
in plenty of time to make your meeting time to relaxed and time to have
breakfast before the meeting. (08:00)

Keep an eye on the weather, if it snows take a shovel!

If you leave after 06:00 you will be lucky to make your meeting. You
will get rush hour traffic in Aberdeen. After 06:30 you have no chance
what so ever.

There are options to get clear of traffic if the road works are still
in place between Stonehaven and Portlethen. (Should be OK if you leave
early though) You can take the B979 but this is not the easiest route
if you are not used to the area. Check it in Autoroute. There are a few
left right turns to keep on the road till you get to the A96. Listen to
North Sound radio for road traffic updates.

My son lives in Aberdeen near the airport and I live near to Glasgow
Airport. On a quiet road I can do it in 2 hours 40 minutes, but you
are travelling at rush hour on arrival in Aberdeen. The hazards have
been listed. Stick to the main roads - Glasgow - Perth - Dundee -
Aberdeen on the dual carriageway. DO NOT LEAVE AFTER 6am Oh - and
watch out for the speed cameras between Dundee and Aberdeen - there's
at least 7....

Best of luck - they had snow friday but i think its clear at the moment

C'mon the pars.......

I've driven it million's of times and take the dual carriageway
everytime, M8,M80,M9 etc
Glasgow-Cumbernauld-Perth-Dundee-Arbroath-Aberdeen

Typically takes 2.5 hours doing 70mph but call it 3 in case of delays.
Working in the city centre I normally follow signs to Aberdeen Harbour
as it can cut out the slow moving traffic entering the city at the west
end (Queens's Cross). The harbour is right in town incidentally.

I must add, you should give yourself another half hour to get to Dyce
where the airport is. That can be a slow drive as it's all through
built up areas and 30mph zones.

And read the above comments about the speed cameras, I think that's how
they fund the entire Grampian police force, I have 6 points on my
licence collected north of Dundee.

I normally catch the 0642hrs First Scotrail service from Glasgow Queen
Street which gets me in for 0915hrs at Aberdeen Central.

Homeward bound the trains depart at 38mins past the hour

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Left GLA at 05:30, via Stirling, Perth & Dundee and was on outskirts of
Aberdeen by 8am. Took 45 mins from there to airport though, so good job I
heeded your warnings.
Journey back was better, left at 11:25 and was back at GLA at exactly 2pm.
Nice clear run and could have been done a lot faster but I'm just listening
to Sally Traffic now and it sounds like there are a few problems this
afternoon.
