In 2002 Continental Airlines moved 122,662 passengers between Glasgow
and Newark. Given 363 services per year and a 172 seat 757 for 6
months and a 235 seat 767-400 for 6 months that works out at an
average of 169 passengers per flight every day of the year and an
annual average load factor of 83%.
Joe it is no wonder COA are delighted with the GLA service and claim
it to be one of their most profitable in Europe. It is because of this
good news that they are interested in serving EDI *IN ADDITION* to
GLA. It seems very sensible if demand is high enough to have a daily
flight from each airport rather than upping GLA to twice daily, I
would say. So stop trying to diss the GLA service.
Furthermore I have a corrospandent who recently flew AA GLA-ORD-GLA
and reported only 1 seat free up front outbound and 3 return with the
economy cabin completely full both ways. A similar calculation to the
above reveals AA's average load factor of 81.5% or 164 souls on board
every flight. Is that enough demand for you? Remember most of the
London services leave half full due to competition and battles for
market share."

And I'm sure the Glasgow hotel industry is reporting excellent occupancy
rates because of this?

I am only talking from anectdotal evidence but summer bookings are
likely to be at an all time high in Glasgow this year. There must be an
outlet where this can be confirmed - officially. Some in certain forums
suggest that the majority of tourists arriving at GLA are Edinburgh
bound. Can I suggest that this is most certainly not the case?
In my humble opinion and personal experience there is a certain type of
tourist who want nothing to do with Edinburgh and all that goes with the
normal tourist itinerary. They look for an alternative and it is on
offer - direct - from certain countries.
There is also those who want to visit more than one city or town or
village. Some think that they will be entrenched in Edinburgh - besotted
with the place.
On that basis I believe there is room for direct services to exotic
locations to both EDI and GLA. Marketing could very easily exploit twee
and culture into whatever airport the customer wanted ? Or even both.
