FIRST and last impressions of a place are the ones that stick. So how does Edinburgh’s Airport score as one of Scotland’s modern
"gateways"?
By any standards, the flight path over the Pentlands, the city and castle plus the Firth of Forth makes a stunning approach.
Hopefully, we Scots are a reasonably friendly, welcoming bunch and the number of grumps in contact with visitors is minimal. So
that leaves the interiors of the buildings and the impression they give. Here it seems there is room for a vast improvement.
The bottom line is BAA’s commercial organisation. It loves firms prepared to pay handsomely for advertising sites. So, coming
perhaps to visit the land of your fathers you are reminded to buy your booze or perfume at BAA outlets.
Then the computer boys, banks and business centres all plug their "special offers".
The hire car and airline offices are at least what you would expect - prominent and efficient looking.
A sad little banana tree and other floral effects remind you of the tropics! And the Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Information
desk, is the usual story - friendly, helpful assistants with a hopelessly inadequate space and display.
The loos and passages have the decor of wind tunnels and there are miles of dreary, vacant, off-grey wall panels where the ad-men
presumably are not interested.
There are thousands of superb poster negatives of this lovely land which our visitors come to enjoy. Why on earth can these
glorious pictures, on their own, not be used to send the signal, "Welcome, you’ve arrived"?

Oh, don't worry, R H Guild. Visitors are about to be visually
assaulted by much worse if a certain George Burck of Academy
Street, Bathgate gets his way.

Ok let's all join in the speculation.... Screens in EDI giving arriving
passengers live views of
the Castle, Princess Street, Carlton Hill, Arthur's Seat etc...etc.
Not on? I believe passengers arriving in a certain Paisley airport get
views of a nearby city? } )
