Been a while since I have posted here so I thought I would post a quick
update as to how things are going for me.
I have finished both dual x-countries (one day and one night). For the day
x-country we went from Boeing Field (BFI) to Hoquiam, WA (HQM). For the
night x-country we went from Boeing Field (BFI) to Port Angeles, WA (CLM).
The night x-country was fun. Flew instruments up, and VFR back. Glad we
were VFR back as we saw the International Space Station go over just as we
reached our cruise altitude of 5,500' Since it was a new moon, my
instructor turned off all of the lights to see what else we could see.
I met my instructor through the Eastside Astronomical Society, so we both
are astronomy geeks, and both have pretty decent telescopes and do
astrophotography, and he is sort of "famous" for getting pictures of the
space station, here is his latest.
http://www.eastsideastro.org/observatory/spacecraft/ISS-July1.jpg He has
even gotten good pictures when the shuttle has been there
http://www.eastsideastro.org/observatory/spacecraft.html
Last Saturday, July 1, went and took the written. Finished in about 1 hour,
missed 5 questions and got 92%. That same day, I did a small x-country
to Skagit Regional/Bayview (BVS) from obviously Boeing Field (BFI). Saw
some hot air balloons over the Redmond/Woodinville area, pretty cool. As I
was coming a back and over the Arlington Airport (AWO) at 5,500', looked
down and saw like a Pitts practicing aerobatics for the airshow this week.
When I asked for flight following, controller gave me my squak code and said
"Cleared through the Class Bravo...", to which I replied, "won't be going
through the Class Bravo, student pilot, not endorsed for Class Bravo...",
then another guy aske for flight following, he was given his squak code and
cleared through the Class B, and he read it back, and his mike was
apparently stuck because after the readback you hear say "That means we
could go in the class B, but we won't... I don't like to go in there, that
is where the big planes are and it is kind of scary..." for like two minutes
until his mike unstuck and after which the controller said "cessna
<tailnumber>, a little bit of stuck mike back there, and you should be
scared of the Class Bravo, it is my job to keep you safe... "
Have my "big x-country" planned for this sunday. Will be going from Boeing
Field (BFI) to Hoquiam, WA (HQM), to Astoria, OR (AST), to Kelso, WA (KLS)
and back to Boeing Field, with landings at HQM and AST. Going in the
morning so that I can get to Astoria before the wind gets to crazy. :-)
But after the big x-country, don't have much left... 3 hours of checkride
prep and a checkride... Not far to go... :-)

Well, just keep in mind that you need to be looking for other airplanes,
so don't spend too much time stargazing ;-)
Wow, those are really cool. I've done a little astrophotography - mostly
of the Moon. In fact, I have a really nice framed print in my office which
I'm especially proud of. I didn't realize you could get shots of the ISS
though...

Congratulations on that. It really feels good to have it out of the way,
doesn't it?

Yeah, stuck mikes are a real embarrassment. I've had it happen too - I guess
it gets just about everyone at one time or another. After it happens, you
really learn to keep the transmit indicator light in your instrument scan ;-)

Sounds like fun. I haven't flown in that area for a long time, but I remember
how beautiful it was, so I'm envious ;-\

That's right ... not much left. Please post your big x-country experience
as well.
Best of luck!

I was looking for planes, he was stargazing... It also showed me how
much I really don't like flying without any lights at all... The night
x-country also showed me how much "fun" it is to read sectional charts with
a red light. :-)

And all with a little webcam... In two weeks we will be at the Table

I reread what I wrote... The controller's response was actually "You
SHOULDN'T be scared, it is my job to keep you safe... " my fumble
fingers on the keyboard. :-)
I had heard tales of stuck mikes, and this was my first "stuck mike"
encounter, and I was just sitting in the plane yelling out loud, "You have a
stuck mike!!!!!", and you feel sort of sorry for them, because you can't
tell them (that whole only person can transmit at a time thing).

One thing I have learned about flying in the Puget Sound area... It is
pretty hard to get really lost, when you have landmarks such as Mt.Rainier
which you can see from pretty much anywhere, and if you can't see that,
there is Seattle, and then there is also the Sound and the Columbia River.
On days where there weren't clouds hiding Mt. Rainier, I have been able to
see it from over 100 miles away, easily. It is a very impressive mountain
that basically goes from Sea Level to 14,410', and kind of stands off by
itself (It is to the west of the Cascades, and the Cascades go up to about
9,000', maybe higher in spots).

Well, multiple people can certainly transmit (that that it would be
a good thing) but the one with the stuck mike can't hear any of it.
I've heard people yelling at folks with a stuck mike before, and really
don't see what they think that will accomplish ;-\

Great feeling to know it is coming and to look back at how far you've come!

Looking at the weather forecast I will need all the best wishes I can get...
Weather tomorrow is generally supposed to be good, the only potential
problem spot is Astoria, Or. (AST), as they are currently forecasting
"Morning clouds/Fog", so the ceiling could be IFR/MVFR... I do have a "back
up plan" in case the weather at Astoria doesn't cooperate, and that would be
basically a "tour of Puget Sound", Boeing Field (BFI) -> Paine Field
(PAE) -> Skagit Regional (BVS) -> PAE -> Bremerton (PWT) -> Olympia (OLM) ->
Chehalis (CLS) -> BFI, with landings at BVS and OLM,and obviously BFI , as
the weather for the Puget Sound area is looking pretty good for tomorrow,
just the coast in the morning could have some clouds... Leaving at
10:30am, so hopefully the clouds on the coast will burn off before then.
I really want to do the BFI->HQM->AST->KLS->BFI, as the way I have it
planned, it will take me with in 5-10 miles of Mt. St. Helens, and should
have a nice view of it. |
