Hi All...
Completed the "Short Solo XC" requirement this morning with a most enjoyable
trip from Chandler Muni to Tucson International (and back...natch)
Couldn't have had a better weather day. Wheels up at 0800MST kept the
thermal bumps at bay and in CAVU with very light winds, I was able to
concentrate more on my Radio and NAV skills and less on staying straight and
level above a hot desert.
I usually use COM 1 to TX/RX and use COM 2 to monitor ATISs etc. This trip,
I made myself work back and forth across both radios, pre-setting the next
three needed freqs well in advance. It definately lightened the workload.
Tucson Approach offered up the "Extremely Long Straight In Approach To RWY
11L" with about 35nm still to go, runway in sight with about 21nm to go, got
passed by one 737 and six F16s enroute to a good landing, right down the
centerline. On short final, there were four F16s waiting to go and I just
blurted out "Holy Sh*t...they're waiting for me to get the heck out of the
way..." Glad I wasn't holding the TX button down. I could hear the whine
of their engines while I was still 1/4 mile from touchdown, at 100' agl,
over the sound of my own engine and through my David Clarke's...!!! And
they were only at idle power...!!!
One sin of "omission" today: Neglected to get ATIS at Tucson before
contacting Clearance Delivery. The guy on the other end didn't admonish me,
but an already hot cockpit got a might warmer <blush> And I was so proud of
myself for remembering to contact Clearance before Ground too...DOH!
The return trip was entirely as much fun as the trip down. Kept my VOR
tracking centered, found my intersections, got my times written down, etc,
etc...it's actually starting to all make sense now.
One sin of "commision" on this leg, however. I was approaching KCHD from
the south and it was still early enough in the day that we hadn't had the
usual daily wind shift yet, so they were still using RWYs 4 L/R. Tower
offered me the choice of full pattern to 4R or base entry. I opted for the
base entry and was told "Report 2 Mile Right Base For Runway 4R..." Don't
know why I brain-cramped, but my reply: "Report 2 Mile Base, Cleared To Land
4R..."
A minute or two passed (it was probably less...) and a different voice
popped on with: "Cessna 53564, you are NOT cleared to land...you are cleared
to enter a right base for 4R...call two miles out..."
Did I mention that a hot cockpit can suddenly feel warmer?? I apologized
for the confusion...fortunately they weren't very busy.
Landed, shut down and tied down to add 2.2hrs PIC to the logbook. I
initially offered my logbook to my CFI who said: "What am I supposed to do
with this? I wasn't there..." (Sound of hand slapping forehead: Oh
Yeah...it was a SOLO flight...)
Next week KCHD --> KBLH --> KYUM --> KCHD for my Long XC.
Anyone have any tips on flying into/out of KBLH and or KYUM??
Thanks All...

Ok Jay, you officially suck...getting to see stuff like that when you're
a student...geeze Yep, talk about realistic distractions,
especially when you (like the rest of us) suffer from AADD, Airplane
Attention Deficit Disorder.

Happens to everyone, even the guys who fly for a living. Why is it that
as soon as you press the mic. button, the brain and mouth sometimes
disconnect?
Sounds like you're knocking down those requirements one by one. Good
for you. It probably isn't long before you start checkride prep.
I'm still trying to get re-motivated on the instrument written. Oshkosh
and two weekends out of town have put a damper on studying. Ah, could
be worse I suppose...

Great post Jay. I'm reliving my training out of CHD (P10 back then)
all over again :-)

Go early. Watch the winds on the Colorado River. I'm not sure why,
but it always seems to be windy as hell there. Fortunately, it's
usually in the same direction as the runway. When I took my long XC
to Blythe and Lake Havasu, the winds were reported calm when I left
and pushing 30 Kts by the time I got there. That's not unusual for
the Colorado River Valley.
Navigate very carefully in the vicinity of the restricted airspace
around Yuma. Back in the days before GPS, it was fairly common for
students on XC flights to bust the airspace and get a long chewing out
at YUM. GPS is not essential for avoiding the areas if you use the
ground cues. Coming out of YUM for CHD, the highways and railroad
will keep you oriented.
BTW - I flew in from Idaho on Monday and heard that a student in a
new(er) 172 had run off the runway in CHD. Was that one of your
school's planes?

Hi John,
Thanks for the tips on the Blythe/Yuma hop...
As far as the C172 incident, the FAA report shows it departed from Stellar
Airpark which would lead me to believe it may have come from Angel Air.
It does not show up in the NTSB database.
In any event, it isn't an N number from where I'm training.

Hehehe...don't hate me because we train F16 jocks out here in the desert! I
so wanted to bring a camera with me and shoot some stuff from under the
shade of my wings, but I was afraid the TSA/Airport Admin people would have
blown a gasket seeing me out there with a 300mm lens.
So, who's standing in the lobby of the Tucson Exec terminal? A USAF Master
Seargent with a camera with a big ol' lens on it. He's headed out to the
ramp to shoot some pics...sigh.

Funny thing is, out of all the skills I've had to learn (more like have
beaten into me), radio work has been the easiest. Guess it's because I make
my living (Sports TV) wearing a headset, listening to lots of voices at once
and being able to react when you know you are the one being barked at.
Comms is the one area where I have a hard time cutting myself any slack.
I tease my CFI by telling him that I'm going to call ATC with my "John King"
voice.

Yup, once I get the long XC out of the way it will be "Hello Mr. Practical
Test Standards Booklet" time...ugh, stalls. I don't like 'em. Can't I just
do some additional Steep Turns instead? I likes Steep Turns!

True, you could be trying to get re-motivated to say, paint the garage or
something else that is not as important as flying! :O)
Thanks for your continuing encouragement. I really appreciate it.

I have tried doing this on occasion. However, I inevitably end up
leaving the com selector on 2 instead of 1 or vice versa and
transmitting on the wrong one. So I just leave 1 for ATC/CTAF and use
2 for 121.5 and ATIS... the times I've tried to get smart I outsmart
myself from time to time.. just a word of caution.
