Does anyone know whether Germania Express is still planning to fly
from Prestwick to Berlin? Prestwick is no longer on their destination
list but their web site is still available in English which makes me
wonder if they are going to fly into another UK airport from Berlin

Prestwick is now back on Germania's web site. Apparently it was an
administration error

Wasn't the newsletter written when Germania had taken Prestwick off
it's destination list temporarily due to an admin error? I just
checked again and the Prestwick - Berlin route is still there.

Good point Eric,I dont think they would cancel it now after all the
bookings they have had.I mean they were even thinking of upgrading to
a 737-300 they were that good.
|
I am only going by the information i was given by that european
aviation news leter. I also dont think they will pull out i have also
hear els where that flights on this service are to go daily not just
monday to friday and at the same time operate with a 737-???

NEW GLASGOW PRESTWICK-BERLIN ROUTE STARTS ON MONDAY
Germania Express's new low-cost service between Glasgow Prestwick and
Berlin Tegel airport takes off for the first time next week.
Prestwick Managing Director Tom Wilson said: "Everything's in place
for the first flight on Monday September 1.
"The decision to link Scotland with Berlin is a good one. There's a
lot of interest in the city, long regarded as a symbol of the
East-West division of Europe. But now it's a vibrant commercial,
educational and industrial centre, and it's attracting both leisure
and business travellers. I expect it will do very well as a
short-break destination."
It's the only scheduled air service between Scotland and Berlin. The
airline has opted to serve the Scottish market from Glasgow Prestwick,
Scotland's fastest-growing airport, recognising the airport's low cost
base so vital to the success of low cost airlines.
The new service is receiving assistance from the Scottish Executive
Interim Route Development Fund.
Berlin-based Germania is one of Germany's leading no frills airlines.
It operates to seventeen European destinations - five in Germany, four
in Spain, three in Austria, two in Switzerland and it also flies to
Salonika, Istanbul and Tiflis in Georgia.
One-way fares are 88 Euros (around £60 ) which includes all taxes and
charges. Germania will use Fokker 100 aircraft on the route and
initially will operate a daily Monday-Friday service departing
Prestwick at 13:00. "Whilst this is a true low-cost operation,
passenger comfort is second to none. The beautifully fitted-out
aircraft have 100 all-leather seats positioned at a roomy 36" pitch,"
said Mr Wilson.
And he explained why Berlin is such an attractive and fascinating
desination.. "It's an extraordinary city, seemingly in a perpetual
state of transformation. It was the weather-vane of Europe and the
frontline of the Cold War but now, a decade after the fall of the
Berlin Wall, Berlin is busy re-inventing itself as a cosmopolitan
centre on a level with London, Paris and New York..
"At the weekend there's a carnival atmosphere on the streets, with
hundreds of trendy bars, restaurants, clubs and bars thronging with
visitors, and Potsdamer Platz is now a bustling entertainment quarter.
The city has become a magnet for people seeking alternative lifestyles
and has developed a cutting edge arts scene and vibrant nightlife.
Outside the city Potsdam and the magnificent palace of Sanssouci is a
great day trip and the countryside is dotted with towns and villages
that have a charming "lost in time" feel.
Germania Chief Executive Dr. Hinrich Bischoff said: "I'm delighted to
be able to provide this new air service and am very confident that
Berliners will be using it to visit Scotland in large numbers. Through
the fantastic co-operation and partnership with Glasgow Prestwick, I
am hopeful that this link between Scotland and Germany will be the
first of many for Germania."
Seats can be booked on www.gexx.de or by telephoning 0871 2230700

Any reports on this service (i.e did it actually "take-off"?)? The
PIK website was unusually reticent, since they usually trumpet every
new service with photographs + press release. I see the Germania
website shows flights full until the 5th September (and with a 07:55
dep. time from PIK). Flights revert to the original dep. time (13:10
I think) at the end of this week.
Just curious...
