Europe's top two travel companies TUI and Thomas Cook are seeing
differing levels of demand for the summer season in their home
market of Germany, according to an industry source and company
officials.
TUI's summer booked sales in Germany, the most important market for
Europe's largest travel firm, are down year-on-year but the drop is
"significantly less" than 10 percent, an industry source said on
Friday. "TUI has problems in several important destination areas,"
the source said.
A TUI spokesman declined to comment on specific bookings figures for
the summer.
"We started well into the summer season. It was running poorly
before Christmas, but now bookings are picking up again," the
spokesman said.
Meanwhile Europe's second-largest travel firm, Thomas Cook, is
seeing a steady rise in demand at its main German travel unit
Neckermann, where summer bookings are up nearly ten percent
year-on-year, the firm said.
Sales at Neckermann were also higher, though not as much as the
bookings because of lower prices, German head Detlef Altmann told
journalists late on Thursday in comments embargoed to Friday.
Thomas Cook is owned by Lufthansa and KarstadtQuelle.
