Flybe Launches its Fair Deal on Baggage

Live - Midday Friday 16th December!

Flybe, one of Europe's leading low cost airlines, today announces its new
'Fair Deal on Baggage' for air travellers, which will come into effect in
early February for 2006. Under the 'Fair Deal':

- If you do not carry checked baggage, you will no longer have to pay the
cost of carrying other peoples bags and will save £1 off your ticket
- Flybe will double the weight allowance that can be carried as hand
baggage.
- Flybe will remove excess baggage charges for 99% of the travelling public
by increasing hold baggage allowance to 25kgs (the highest in the low cost
sector).
- Flybe will exempt all economy plus passengers from paying any baggage
costs (up to 30kg).
- Flybe will introduce charges for each checked item of hold baggage of £2,
per item, per sector, if booked in advance, and £4 per item, per sector if
presented un-booked at the airport
- As a result of the change passengers will now only pay for the service
they use rather than the cost being unfairly spread across all passengers on
the aircraft whether they check a bag in or not

Hi
Wot a joke. Getting charged £2 per bag. I wonder who will be the next
airline to try and rip off the passengers. Its bad enough on some flights
with people trying to stuff large bags in the overhead lockers but its going
to get worse and on some of their plans if your sitting under the wing then
the lockers are half size.

Sounds confusing. So £2 or £4 with luggage but -£1 if without.
Basically, then, nobody pays the advertised fare.

Interesting that Flybe have done this first. Ryanair have said for sometime
that those without luggage should not subsidise the cost of luggage handling
etc. The Flybe scheme looks very similar to that which Mr O'Leary proposed.
It won't be long then till all the airlines do this. Suits me as I travel
95% of the time with only hand luggage.

Im sick of people bringing too many and too large bags into the cabin, just
causes delays on boarding and leaving.

Yes, annoys me as well.
It' s the crap they give the crew when they can't find a place for it.
The one that really pisses me off is when they walk on and leave their
bags at row 1 when they are back in row 35.
And the other thing that pisses me off is when you get a seat where the
crew have left their bags or the inflight entertainment system/safety
gear is stowed.

Am I just easily annoyed?

This is them getting in ahead of Ryanair, who have been talking about it
for some time now. No charge for overweight passengers (I mean the
people!) yet though. I've seen that mentioned as well.

You may be easily annoyed, but I share your annoyance. Having been in an
emergency situation where the lockers opened and I was hit on the head
with someone else suitcase, I always check my bag, and carry a reporters
bag which goes under the seat in front. For myself, I would ban anything
heavier than a coat in the overheads and people with more than one piece
of hand luggage.

Hi

Recently on a BA flight someone tried to leave their bags at row 1 but they
were told they to take their bags and move them to the back where they were
sitting or check the bag into the hold. They were not happy at all, but I am
glad they are doing this as I usually get row 1 thru 6 when travelling with
BA so not happy when others think they are being so smart with their bags.

Its going too become a joke on some Flybe flights.

Hi
Well I also find it bad that they will start this charging. Some of the kit
I carry must be put in the hold, even though I could easily fit it in a
carryon case, so I will be penalised for using their airline for my business
travel.

Modest charges to begin with but how long before they esculate?

I can see things deteriorating over time with pax boarding with
oversize bags the cabin bins cannot accommodate.

No airline has yet addressed the issue of oversized people.

What then? These bags being redirected to the hold free of charge or
what?

Yes, they would have to be.

Bad move Flybe?

It may open the floodgates.

Interesting reply from Ryanair approaching the same problem from another
direction.

Doug

Michael O'Leary, the chief executive of Ryanair, floated the idea of
charging for hold baggage last year. The airline said yesterday it had
no immediate plans to follow Flybe's lead, but its goal remained for
passengers to fly with no luggage whatsoever.

A Ryanair spokesman said it will encourage passengers to travel with
hand-luggage only by cutting fares by some £2 in an online check-in
trial starting early next year. This will enable travellers with no hold
baggage to print out their own boarding passes and head straight to
departure gates without the need to queue at check-in desks.

a number of US airlines have, I believe Southwest is one of them. If
you cannot sit in the seat with the arm rest down, then you pay for
two seats.

It's a start. Personally I'd weigh luggage and passenger together.

Again you see the RYR logic. Their proposal less time at check in desks
therefore less cost

Just noticed that Globespan are selling extra baggage allowances in advance.
You can bet you won't now get away with taking extra baggage and having it
ignored at check in .

Doug

EXTRA BAGGAGE

Additional baggage allowance can be purchased in advance at the rate of
£15.00 for 10 kilos per flight sector. click here to book
