Fly me, I'm ready

INTERVIEW
DOUGLAS FRIEDLI

Scotland on Sunday, 22/01/06

GIVEN the frugal nature of the low-cost airlines business, it would not
have been a surprise to find Tom Dalrymple, the boss of Flyglobespan,
headquartered in spartan offices between the toilets and the check-in desk.
After all, Stelios Haji-Ioannou famously set up his easyJet operation in a
tin shed at Luton Airport with two desks and three phones. Instead,
Dalrymple's command post is in the converted former Scott's Porage Oats
mill in Edinburgh's wealthy Colinton village.

Nor has he fallen into line with his rivals' love of provocative soundbites
and stunts.

apart from the final paragraph, LOL -

Local roots are a positive selling point, but they do have their
downside. "The reality is that for two-thirds of the population of
Scotland, it is easier to fly from Glasgow. But we are an Edinburgh
company, and we are committed to flying from here. If we announce a
route from Glasgow but not Edinburgh, the complaints come flooding in."

Think I'll turn the killfile off today.

I don't know but perhaps you should write to this guy and point out that EDI
isn't such a bad choice after all.

Yes, but as he said (of GLA) on a previous occassion - "That's where
the population is."

Why should they, they have a perfectly convenient local airport(s) they
can fly from, why endure long surface journeys and bankroll a far off
not local economy?

it doesn't matter to me where they fly from but for many more EDI will be a
good choice that's all. I wasn't wanting to get into a serious argument over
the whole thing.. ;-)

You don't agree that you should fly local and support your (wherever it

well maybe but of the last three times I've flown I haven't had any choice
due to the destination and time of year. Once from EDI to LGW, twice from
GLA to LAX and ACE. It would have been easier to fly from EDI if there had
been flights.

Anyway what is local to an airport you need to define that for me? I would
say local is the nearest (and easiest to get to) airport with a flight to
wherever I am going would be one definition. This could change on different
days of the week and when new transport links are built. For many
destinations GLA is my local airport but I would prefer if it was most often
EDI as I like my journeys to be as fast as possible. Does that fit your
definition of local?

I would add that if I found flying from EDI horrendously more expensive than
somewhere else I would calculate if the extra time involved was worth the
money saved before deciding. Heresy I hear some saying, lol..
