Folks,

I am looking to mount a UHF CB into our Cessna 172, and patching the audio
out through the comms panel. I vaguely recall there are only a few of the
UHF units available on the market that can be modded
to work through an aircraft comm panel. I think its the high impedance of
the panel & associated circuitry that causes probs plugging the UHF audio
in.

Probably will be using the UHF units' own microphone (too many probs trying
to use the aircraft one), but the audio output will be coming through the
comm panel.

Investigating this a couple of years ago, the avionics tech at Archerfield
advised me there was only a couple of units that could be modded for this
work. I think one was an Electraphone unit that could take an additional
board. The other was (I think) a Uniden. Since I investigated this, I see
there is an Icom (IC400-Pro) now on the market that might do the job nicely
if it can be modded to operate through the panel.

I am planning on having a transponder and additional VHF fitted in the next
few months, and so it seems the time to add the UHF if the dash is going to
be already out. Saves a lot of money in labour if they are all done at once.
The tech who will do the transponder install has already quoted cost of
install, provided I supply the radio.

Anyone done this here? If so, what was involved(brands, models, mods
required, cost)? Whatever I UHF unit I get, I would prefer something that
can have additional UHF channels programmed, as it might be usefull to have
a separate channel for mustering. The Tx in the aircraft travels a long
way! I thik most of the current crop of UHF units can have additional
channels programmed by the dealer

Any info appreciated.

Cheers,
