Yes I think the Motion flash drive is probably the same Samsung
device.
The fun bit is if you have an ls800 already bought... there is no way
I could have got mine upgraded here in the UK. The local dealer can't
even open the unit. They certainly won't image the old HD onto the new
one!
Also the flash drive prices are going to come down but I bet Motion
won't drop their $600 excess :)
However, the bottom line is that the ls800 still runs too hot, and
nobody has a solution to that. It's just a bad design. |

Here's the issue, as the alt rises, air density (number of molecules per
sq.ft) falls. Hence there are less molecules to conduct the heat away. From
my mech days, I seem to recall that at 10K ft, you have 48% of the cooling
capability for the same airflow that at ground level. You might want to see
if you can underclock the

the ... I assume you were going to mention the CPU, as you don't "clock"
a HD. However, I thought the problems concerned the disk drive?

Good point re the heating issues at altitude.
The flash hard drive makes a very small difference to battery life;
only about 5% extra and this is after some careful measurements done
on another tablet computer. I am going to fit a small fan on the back
of the ls800.
I am still puzzled how Anywheremap etc can sell the ls800 into this
market. |

The pics of the actual drive are in the ls800 URL I posted.

The URL is duff now but you can look around.
It seems to me that Samsung have just got around to marketing these.
About 6 months ago they announced a new range of laptops which would
use these, but there is no sign of them. The drives have been "around"
for a couple of years but have only just become available. A lot of
press releases from Samsung have just appeared in UK computer
magazines on the drives. |

I am not a hard drive engineer, but consider this as a sceond problem for
high altitudes: The read/write heads are "flying" over the spinning platter
on an air cushion, they are not suspended mechanically. If pressure drops,
the danger of the heads impacting the platters (damaging or destroying
both) rises considerably.

Right, that's the real issue, not cooling. Couple that with turbulence
and vibration and your hard drive is toast. DB |
