Well, I finally connected with one of the CFIs at my new flying
club and got checked-out in the C172 (this was necessary before
they would let me take the plane out on my own).

Boy! was I rusty. Plus, I think I suffered from some of that old
"oh, there's an instructor in the plane, so I have to be stupid" ;-

On the very first trip around the pattern, I got all the way to
turning base, then realized I was still at cruise power and TPA!
I looked over at the CFI and said: Oops - I forgot that I was
landing this thing! ;-)

He said that was fine, because he wanted to see me execute a go-
around anyway. So, I took the plane to the numbers and then executed
a go-around ;-)

Otherwise, the flight went fine. All my landings were reasonable - the
plane just seemed to be gliding on ice. It is sure in better shape than
the klunkers I was renting at my last FBO.

My plan is to get out there every week for a while and get back in
the swing of things. One major hurdle out of the way! Now that I'm
a club member and checked-out in the airplane, I can take it up
as I please (weather, schedule, etc. accommodating, of course).

Just happy to be back among the airborn!

It was over three months for me. I'm sure glad that's over with ;-)

What is it with that? I get the very same way. With my instructor in
the plane, I screw up in ways I NEVER have alone. Is it the same way on
the check ride?

Will it be for you, I don't know. You should do your best to feel
confident and comfortable - treat the DE as a passenger.

One problem is that it seems easy to forget the procedure steps when
you feel that you're under pressure. So before each one, just make
sure you think about what you're going to do before you do it. It
will help you focus and do the maneuver the way you have drilled it
for weeks.

How did I do? ... you probably don't want to know ;-

. Well done Mark , I know what you mean about having an instructor on
board. I find it hard to really enjoy flying when I know I am being watched

the whole time. Whats this about being still at cruise power by base turn?
Isnt that normal? Certainly down under our circuit training has us in
cruise mode until after turning base. Then drop power to about 1700rpm and
hang out 2 stages of flap. ( thats in a Warrior, in a C150 its 20 degree of
flap) Oh and for my edjucatin whats TPA?
Terry
PPL in waiting down under. ( 6 weeks now and it still hasnt arrived in the
mail ). Apparently its my security background check holding things up.
Perhaps Terry sounds a bit too much like Terrorist. Funny thing is I can
still go out and fly solo as a student. Work that out !

I was taught (in the U.S.) that when abeam the touchdown point on
downwind, carb heat on, power at 1700RPM and slow to 80-90 kts
and 10 deg flaps, etc.

This is in a C-172.

Traffic Pattern Altitude.

In the U.S., once we pass our check ride, we get a temporary certificate
on the spot, which is good for 120 days. The permanent certificate
usually arrives in about 60-90 days.

Very cool. Nice to hear that you're able to commit aviation on a

regular basis Mark.

So...there's hope for me? You mean that this IFR stuff gets easier when

the CFII is out of the picture? :-)

Nice...give me a month and I'm planning to be available as a safety

pilot. The ink may still be wet on the instrument rating at that time.
Mmmmm, Mexican food at WVI....mmmmmmm :-P

Nope Smile Don't want to burst your bubble :-)

Nobody to bail you out should you make a wrong move.

The first time you do it in actual conditions, well, it's a much more
intense rush then your first solo (at least for me!).

Got used to seeing someone in the right seat, and when I entered the clag
for the first time and saw to the right, that there was empty space, the
reality hit home, that I am the only one able to bring the beast (my plane)
back home the same way I took it out *very big smile*.

Actually, this forces me to think more clearly and get it right.
All through my training, once the CFI is out of the way, it goes
much more smoothly.

I'll have to wait to see how that feels.

That was certainly the case for my PP-ASEL training. Especially my
first solo. I was sure I wasn't ready, but I rose to the task and
did just as my CFI expected.

That was my thought exactly. "Oh shit, I'm in actual now and there's no one
else up here to bail my ass out if I do something stupid."
