Sadly, I just had a private pilot fail his checkride. I've only had one
other student fail and it was a long time ago. How do I do the
endorsement? Do I just resign all 3 checkride endorsements (60 day
training, written deficiency, checkride auth)?? Is there a specific
61-65D endorsement for a retest? Do I need to endorse the specific
items that examiner failed the applicant on?
It was too bad. Like many students this student was only able to fly
once a week. This leaves us with precious little time to go over every
thing before the checkride. His short field landings were a bit gorilla
fisted but he hit his point each time. In hind sight I should have
taken more time to review stable approaches with him, but we just
always seem pressed for time and I guess I was thinking (if it ain't
broken...). Under the stress of a long checkride he dropped the landing
in short of the imaginary beginning of the runway with the examiner. I
guess that's what I love about aviation, I'm always learning. I will
certainly put more attention of stable approaches with my students in
the future.

I just checked my copy of AOPA's Air Safety Foundation Endorsement Guide..
looks a lot like AC61-65D
Endorsement for retesting FAR61.49
"I have given (Firstname MI Lastname) additional (flight or ground) training
and find him/her proficient to pass the (name of the knowledge or practical
test)." Std CFI Signature Block
AC61-65D also mentions that the instructor must sign the back of Form 8710-1
for each retake for a practical test.
Also remember that the applicant needs 3 hours instruction received in the
previous 60days.. so if your previous signoff was ok.. check to make sure
that with the recent instruction (maybe on hour just to get the landing
correct), and counting back 60days from the new projected test date, there
are still 3 hours instruction received.
