Emirates announce major expansion from Glasgow Airport

BAA Press Release

Glasgow Airport has welcomed plans by long haul airline Emirates to
massively increase capacity on its daily service from Glasgow to Dubai.

From October, Emirates will replace its 284 seat Airbus A330 with a 427
seat Boeing 777-300 aircraft, increasing capacity on the route by 50%.

Stephen Baxter, MD at Glasgow Airport said: "We're delighted with this
announcement. Emirates have been a huge success at Glasgow Airport, and
this expansion is a tremendous vote of confidence in the airport and the
city. The knock on effect on the region's economy, and the local tourism
industry, will be enormous."

He added: "Emirates has been a real success story at Glasgow Airport, not
just in terms of passenger numbers, but in an economic sense too. Emirates
SkyCargo offers businesses from across Scotland direct access to the
markets of the Gulf region and beyond. This expansion therefore represents
a major economic boost for Scottish exporters"

Great news. One of the factors in having all these extra seats will I
am sure keep prices very competative as EK will want to sell as many as
possible.
In the past their prices have been very competative this might make
them even sharper. Good news for all people flying from Scotland

Does the EK 777 actually hold 427 people? Or is this like all the press who
were going on about the new A380 holding 550 people when nobody actually
intends to or ever would cram this many folk in?

It does Fraser. The 773 is longer than a 744.

I think the 772 hold about 360 people, and the 773 is considerably longer.

The 777-200 (2 class) offers 42 Business Class seats and 304 Economy Class
passengers, allowing for a total of 346 passengers. These aircraft are
currently being updated to provide greater comfort and a new 500 channel
entertainment system. The B777-300, the largest member of the Emirates
fleet, can carry a total of 434 passengers, with 49 Business Class seats and
385 Economy seats.

Thus we have a reason why they don't need a 747 for their fleet!
There's been one occasion when the MAN flight had 434 passengers on
board (and another occasion 400+); both were prior to the service going
double daily.

I thought MAN was double daily long before EK introduced the 773
David. Could you let us know when MAN went double daily ?

I reckon GLA will go double daily within 18 months. The evening flight
gives a short connection to the nonstop SYD flight. I'm sure this
would entice more business pax onboard.

Double daily started 1st June 2003; we had 773s operating in February
2002

Undoubtedly - it would certainly beat the BA/QF preferred method of
travelling to SYD ;)

Indeed - but there are some fools who would rather do that than swallow
their bigoted pride and travel less than an hour west to fly direct.

550 is the standard, factory, layout for the a380 and is not cramming.
If you want to cram 'em all into economy accomodations you can get 800
seats. It's a big plane.

Nothing yet. I would imagine that it's atleast 18 months away. They
would appear to be following the same 'route' so to speak as MAN & BHX
- start with a 332, upgrade to a 772/3, see how that goes, and then
look at a double daily operation.

BHX + GLA certainly didn't follow the same route as MAN to begin with
as far as I'm concerned ;)
