25 February 2004
Edinburgh Airport has today welcomed the news that one of Russia's
leading airlines is to launch a direct service between Scotland and
Moscow.
Transaero Airlines will begin a weekly service in June, flying on
Wednesdays to Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport. Russia is a
new destination for Scots business and leisure travellers from
Edinburgh and the city of Moscow is a welcome addition to the
exciting choice of cities now available direct from Scotland.
BAA Scotland supported the new route through its £60m route
development fund. Richard Jeffrey, Managing Director of Edinburgh
Airport said: "Transaero Airline's decision to launch a direct
Edinburgh to Moscow service is great news for Scotland's capital
city and it's growing international route network.
This exciting new route will strengthen links between the two
cities, boosting tourism and business opportunities. We look forward
to supporting the airlines' efforts in the coming months and years."
Russia's capital city, with its spectacular architecture, is a blend
of sparkling beauty and historic charm mixed with a contemporary,
modern atmosphere. Ideal for business and leisure visitors, modern
Moscow is fast becoming one of Europe's most stylish and exciting
capital cities. Don't forget to visit Red Square and the Kremlin as
well as enjoying the vodka bars!
Valery Musaev, Deputy Director General, International Relations of
Transaero Airlines said: "We are delighted to be offering Scotland's
first regular and direct link with Russia. which will provide an
essential link between these dynamic capital cities. We are
confident that this service will be a very welcome addition for
business people and also for leisure travellers wishing to enjoy
Russia's capital city."
The flight programme will be inaugurated from 2 June 2004 and
flights will go on sale for the route at the end of February 2004.
To book go to Flight House Fernhill Road Horley, RH6 9SX, or call
Transaero Airlines' Reservations on Tel: 0870 850 7767 (Fax: 0870
240 2208), open 09:00 – 17:30, Monday – Friday.

A weekly service? For business?
For a real route they should fly at least three times weekly!
I dare to say it wont be very successful. Could be just a tourism-route in
the summer. (Like VIE-Cornwall-charter during the summer for elderly people
groups!)
BTW: How can this route be supported by the route development fund? I
thought there is a minimum of 5 weekly flights!

Might start out that way, but hopefully it will develop into (at least) 3 or
4 times weekly. I can see it doing well in the long run.
Congratulations to BAA Edinburgh, another brilliant coup! :-)

It is excellent news indeed Callum. 2004 is going to be some year. The
choice of destinations is growing by the month - very exciting times ahead
for Scottish commercial aviation.

Gernot was correct..1 weekly flight is hardly business orientated... I suspect
the Russians will flock to it for Scotland's balmy sunshine! )

Pity that it's Transaero, an a/l that has not had its troubles to seek
over the years. Particularly when they had to return all their 757s to
lessor a couple of years ago. Fly to moscow on an ageing 737? No
thanks!

What does their fleet consist of, Eurogen? My understanding was mainly 767s
and 737s, with some newer generation 737s among them. Do they operate
737-200's as well?
