Edinburgh is the ideal place to start off a trip to the north of the
British Isles. Enjoy the flair of the Scottish capital or discover
Scotland’s unique nature: the countless lochs of the Highlands, the
many castles and fortresses, the lonely Hebridean islands and the
imposing cliffs on the east coast.

Information About the City Edinburgh

Sights
Edinburgh Castle forms the centrepiece of the city. Visible from far
off, Edinburgh’s main landmark is situated on top of a 115 metre
high, steeply sloping rock. The Royal Mile, the main street in the
Old Town, connects Edinburgh’s two royal fortresses with each other:
Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Most of the sights are to be found in the Old Town with its historic
buildings and winding alleys, and the elegant New Town, a
classicistic city district with beautiful sandstone houses. You can
find out all about the secrets of whisky in the Scotch Whisky
Heritage Centre.

Entertainment
The Cowgate and Grassmarket districts are situated in the south of
the Old Town. This lively quarter is full of cafés, pubs, clubs and
little shops. When the sun is out, you can enjoy a leisurely cup of
coffee in the Grassmarket, which is a cool place to set off on a
nocturnal tour in the evening.

Shopping
Go shopping in impressive Princes Street and enjoy the magnificent
view of Princes Street Gardens, the Castle and the Old Town.
Knitwear, woollens, whisky, pottery and glassware are all beautiful
souvenirs of Scotland.

Events
Edinburgh is also known as the Festival City. Every year in August,
the city turns into one great big stage. The Edinburgh International
Festival of Music and Drama, one of the largest and most important
international art festivals, has been running since 1947.

Other events in August are the Fringe Theatre Festival, Edinburgh
Military Tattoo, International Jazz and Blues Festival,
International Book Festival and International Film Festival.

Surrounding Area
You should take a trip to the beautiful North Sea bathing resort of
St. Andrews, where you will find beautiful bathing beaches, famous
golf courses, a picturesque old town and the oldest university in
Scotland.

Loch Lomond, the largest and most beautiful inland lake in the UK,
lies roughly 80 kilometres west of Edinburgh. It is a great place
for hiking, fishing, canoeing and water-skiing.
